Join the Military...what branch?
Just curious how many on here want to or have considered joining the military and what branch.
What do you hope to get out of it?
If this is a repost or has been done to death let me know....I haven't seen one quite like this.

I spent 5 1/2 years in the Air Force and sometimes regret getting out. The Air Force is the branch of the service that most people transfer to. I met a lot of guys who had been in the Army and Marines.
I joined for the chance to see the world (travelled to 11 countries), serve my country, and just grow up. I never had the desire to shoot anybody and the Air Force has the best quality of life.
Funny story, I almost joined the Marines when I was 18 and dropping out of college. My brother-in-law was a jarhead and I really looked up to him. The military used to have a program where you could go to your hometown and work with the recruiter for a few months, and he was able to do this, so he knew the recruiter really well.
I made a visit to the Marine recruiter and was ready to sign up. My brother-in-law was spending the weekend at the house and he happened to answer the phone. Guess who it was? The Marine recruiter asking for me. My brother-in-law yells into the phone "Hell no, he's not joining the Marines!!!" He gives me a dirty look and and that was the end of that.

Statistically the guys in the airforce are much happier with their service. Right now there is a huge load on the army and the marines. Also being a marine is tough as ****, and they encourage you to become borderline psychotic. I've met alot of marines, while in the army, and they are some crazy SOBs. I've also met alot of air force guys and their facilities are nicer, their deployments are shorter (usually 3 months)and if you want to get out it is quite easy to do as they are overloaded at current. Um, I've also had the pleasure of touring an active aircraft carrier, it seems cool to be in the navy but... the living quarters are ridiculously small, you can go days and days without seeing sunlight, it's crazy. Also it's a total sausage fest (just like the marines). Also of note the benefits are the same across all branches. So in my experience I would rank (in terms of your satisfaction) the branches as. Coast Guard>Air Force>Army>Navy>Marines BTW if you are all gung ho to fight, it's not as cool as it sounds, in fact it sucks, stay away from combat MOSs. Hope i helped

I am active duty Air Force and am currently serving in Baghdad, Iraq. Let me make this extremely clear to you. If you join the Army or Marines you WILL have YEAR LONG deployments to WASTELANDS like Iraq and Afghanistan. You WILL be working long hours, eating on the go, 7 days a week. This of course, is in a deployed environment.
In the Air Force you enjoy the best quality of life of all the services, 4 month deployments (if you even get tasked with one), you get treated like a human, ample opportunity for college, etc...
I grew up in an Army family. I have seen it from both sides. Just ask yourself this one question and everything will be clear to you. Do you want a hard life and get treated like **** or do you want a relatively easy life that you can use as a stepping stone to something more?
Try being a tank driver in the civilian world. Now try joining the Air Force and working communications. Then try and get a job. See which one takes you further.
Think long term man...
PM me if you have questions.

These guys are right about the Air Force. It is easier and they do treat their people better overall. That being said I still love the Army and what it has done for me.
For those of you wanting to go Hard Core....Ranger, SEAL, etc you have my utmost respect.

I don't think most people realize the conditioning you need to become a SEAL, JTF2, GSG-9, etc etc etc member. Then there's delta force which IIRC is the elite of the elite SEALS, hand picked.

I have been in the Army 19+ years, wouldn't change it for anything, but Hot$hot said it best in an earlier post.
I have spent two out of the last three years here in Iraq, before I came to Iraq the 1st time, I had just got back from a year in Korea. Thank God i'm retiring next year!!

i hear you Albino, this is also my third time here, I was here for Desert Shield/Storm, came here in 2003, and now again this year. I only have 2 months left here, I can retire in April, but going to retire in December of next year, unless the Army offers me a nice ROTC job on a nice University

Army. I'd love to go Special Forces but have no idea if that's feasible. Gotta lot to learn, although those Challenger 2 tanks look pretty damn good...
Stay safe out there guys...

Sorry Icedragon, women cannot join front line units. That includes special forces and tanks.

They can join infantry and other combat arms, I dunno about special forces though, I doubt it and even if they could none would make it so it's kind of a moot issue.

I believe women can make excellent front line soldiers if they are dedicated enough. Israel allows female paratroopers, and they have a good combat record.

I know, and that's what pisses me off because given the choice I'd have gone Infantry. Hel, I can pull a trigger as much as the man next to me, so I don't know why they won't.

Can you carry a 120lb Bergen across very rough terrain in bad weather, for up to 30 miles? I did it once and it nearly killed me.

Not at this particular moment in time, but I'd do it in a heartbeat once I know my own physical limits.
You run till you puke, get up and carry on. Never give up.
I'm not a pansy-arsed girly who cries for her mummy every time she breaks a fingernail. If I have to do that, I will.
