How many people here actually sleep through the night?
I would kill to get 8 hrs. sleep. For instance the other night I woke up three times to train whistles, (the tracks are at least 1 mile away) twice to to take a whiz and once to let the cat out. Alarm clocks never wake me up because I'm always lying there waiting for the thing to go off.
I may buy one of those sleep number beds and see if that helps.

I think sleep might be the hardest thing for alot of people. I mean I can go to the gym I can eat clean and big. but to sleep through the night is just about impossible. I wake up at least twice every night, for all sorts of reasons. man I hate it.
The funny thing is, that when my wife closes her eyes they don't open untill the alarm goes off. I'm considering sleep aides

i wake up to pee and stuff a lot. But i was more talking about going to work and stuff not being up for 1minute the going back to sleep. Like if anymore then 8 helps or hurts since you aren't eating. Guess it's not too much of a difference.

Maybe you could try some sleeping supplements. Melatonin is usually used to adjust sleep cycles. OR maybe you are just too stressed, you may be lacking something in your diet? How long you should sleep depends on your sleep cycles, 7-8hrs I feel great, any less is crap, any more is crap.

It depends on the person and the need for sleep. It can help you more or it can be a waste (maybe even a negative since you are essentially fasting all night and metabolism is slowed). How much sleep do you need and how high was your relative activity level? There is no perfect perscription.

lol, i thought that was funny "to let the cat out." anyways, i say that 8 hours personally is better for me. after that time, i'm ready to get up and eat something plus if i sleep much longer than that, i'm kinda tired feeling the rest of the day so i try and stay away from that.

man, I don't know how you guys get 8 hours. For me, its extremelly hard to even get 6 because of work and college(masters). But to answer the question, 8 hours should be ideal. I think if you go over, you'd still feel tired.
The rule is that if you can't wake up on your own in the morning(need someone to kick you out of bed), than you haven't got enough sleep.

for all you guys you get up to pee several times during the night, try not drinking any water for about an hour before you go to bed. It has been about 2 weeks since I woke up to something other than my alarm clock

Does anyone know the technical reason why sleeping too much makes you more tired? This seems illogical, but I have experienced it and want to know why it happens. Im bulking so i guess im not burning calories, the only downside is i guess it means more time without food. I usually get like 12 hours sleep a day. Should i try and get into an 8 hour cycle or something?

8 hours of quality sleep is far better than 10 hours of patchy sleep. I find if I go over eight hours, I find it far more difficult to fall asleep the following night. So by limitting myself to 8, I fall asleep as soon as my head hit's the pillow and even though I wake up a lot more difficultly than if I grab 10 hours sleep, once I've gotten through the initial waking up period I feel more refreshed.
It's a bit like eating. You can binge on 1000 calories in one go and feel nice and full, but then not feel hungry again for 5-6 hours. Of you can only eat 500cals, and be ready to eat again in a couple of hours.

The amount of sleep you need depends on your age and activity level.
I need about 9 hours to feel rested, any more then that and I have that sleepy-tired feeling all day.

this is the stupidest question ever. if you can sleep 10 hrs then do so...this is actual sleep though, not waking up after 9 hours and staying in bed from an hour. i usually get 8 but i drink so much water i wake up at 2am to piss.

My stomach wakes me up after about 8 hrs... so if I want to sleep longer I have to get up, have a shake, and then I can go back to sleep for another 3 hrs or so.

Sleep Tips
If you all want to get more sleep or just better sleep these are some things that worked for me.
1. ZMA taken before bedtime at least an hour after eating. It knocks me out, and gives me great lucid dreams. Good chance of helping your Test levels too.
2. Melatonin is cheap and natural
3. Learn about your circadian rhythm. Get lots of natural light into your eyes during the day. Check out "Powerful Sleep" by Kacper Postawski. It's a really good ebook on sleep.
Sleep tight.

Most people in the modern world don't get enough sleep. Ideally you should sleep until you wake naturally but the truth is we all have jobs/school/whatever and don't have that option.
If you can get ten and feel better for it then go for it.

I sleep 10+ hours everynight and seem to be gaining weight a lot faster than before, but then again i have practically no stress in my life now, compared to the insane level of stress i had during the semester. I actually am trying to sleep less...i feel so much more awake when i get 6.5-8 hours of sleep, but it's hard to force yourself to wake up early when you have absolutely no reason (well obligation) to wake up earlier.

I find about 8.5 hours to be optimal for myself, sometimes 9 if feeling a bit run down. How much sleep you need depends on the individual, however one of sleeps main benefits is the release of growth hormone, and this maxes out after 3-4hours. So whatever you need to not feel tired is the best answer here. My training partner sleeps 6 hours a night and gets good gains in the gym - does like to take a energy supp before training though
Eating 1hour prior to sleep releases certain hormones and primes the body for a good pass out > my only suggestion here is to eat low carb as insulin reduces growth hormone production whilst sleeping
And on a final note - Big Ron (ronnie coleman!) only sleeps 5.5hours a night

I think the best would be to only get up to eat, poop, workout and just sleep every other second of the day away.

I think 8 hrs for sleep is enough rather than off days. Because more you sleep more expand your body or relax your body.

I'm trying to gain lean mass and I've been going intensively to the gym for the past 2 months or so. (5x/week, 7exercises/day).
I'm only eating en extra 750 cals a day. Which isn't that much for a "bulk" considering I spend a lot of those at the gym.
But, for some reasons I tend to sleep more than before. Like yesterday I slept 10 hours. It's usually around 9.
Would eating more, in theory, help me get rid of those extra 2 hours of sleep? Or, is it better to sleep more when trying to gain mass?

I'd say sleeping more is better since you grow when you rest.
