Is Pea Protein just as good as Whey Protein if not better?

Okay, so i have been a vegetarian for about a year now and I am loving it. I had initially wanted to become a Vegan but I didn't think it merited the loss of not having Whey protein in my diet so I stuck to my whey protein everyday and nixed the idea of becoming a Vegan.

I did a little research online to see if there were any alternatives to whey that were comparable in amino acid department and also consisted of a high bioavalibility and i came up with this stuff called PEA PROTEIN. Here's a link:

    http://www.veganessentials.com/catal...-22-lb-jug.htm

I even found a website where i can get it for $24 bucks so it's similar in price.

Does anyone think that this Pea Protein could be an effective alternative to Whey Protein? I mean if this stuff is as good as it looks, perhaps I could even become a Vegan and I would really love to do that. I'm just not sure I want to take that leap and give up on Whey yet........

Any replys with some knowledge on this matter would really be appreciated being I hold my diet in high regard. Thanks alot for all of the help guys.

While a quick glance would say it is as good as whey, I really doubt it is. I'm sure this would have come up many times before if it actually was. Pea protein is still plant protein, and plant protein is an inferior source of amino acids.
No offense, but vegans do have a rep as being zealots. I've been harrassed by vegans before. Hell, my sister was one (talk about unhealthy!), and her and her "crew" used to drive me nuts. I wouldn't be suprised if pea protein was, well, vegan propaganda.

I checked into that Pea Protein a while ago. Here is a copy of the email I received from the company that sells it (not the same source as the one you found but the same product):

Pure Advantage Pea Protein Isolates protein digestibility-corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) is .90-1.0 according to the data supplied by the manufacturer. Unfortunately, there is no USP monograph for pea or whey protein isolate, so it is hard to rely on the data alone. Since it is an isolate, the protein is in its purest form. Which means better absorption and bioavailability since there are no other compounds attached. For what its worth, Mike Mahler is a vegetarian athlete and has had the best strength gains using our pea protein. He orders a case a month! http://www.mikemahler.com/veg.html I hope this helps.

Not that you asked, but stay away from rice protein, which is not readily bioavailable.

Thanks for the help guys, i'm still conflicted but the whole Mike Mahler thing made me a little more comfy. I guess i need some more time to ponder it; wish i could find more research on it.

I also found Hemp Protein, which i know is good, hemp is the ****. But it's very expensive and it has a decent amount of carbs in it, i'd rather get carbs from whole grains.

    Thanks Again.
