In a recent Flex Mag, Chris Cormeir said that he tan's and puts protan on too. I would prolly say about 2-4 weeks out, plus put some protan on too, it can't hurt. Just my thoughts, of course I'm a white boy so I have to tan alot

In all actuality I would not...tanning can affect your water balance and it's better to play with that as little as possible. My suggestion is to apply a bronzer such as dream tan about an hour before you go onstage. I would go with dream tan #2, it gives you a great sheen. I've also heard Jan Tana posing oil is awsome for darker skinned competitors.

If you're dark, you don't need to tan, but I've heard from some guys who get beyond shredded tanning can help with water balance. Definitely go with some Dreamtan though, it'll give you a seriously bronzed look.

I think your best bet would be to try it out... Personally I would recomend tanning up to the week of the show and yes I would apply an added skin color / bronzer. I would also recomend you not just go out and buy one type or brand but select a couple.
Make a show day test run and ask peers at the gym.
I am white and I tried ProTan, and Jan Tana. Jan Tana really just made me look redicluls. For me it was ProTan. After applying both, I actually think the Jan Tana would be better for black or darker skin.
I am sure you're training hard, don't let your coloring lose you the show and don't leave it up to luck. Try it out now and you will know for sure.

I've never tanned for a competition. Mostly because I'm darker than all the other guys competing. I'm the same shade of brown as a Snicker's candy bar.

Str8,
I am actually losing water due to tanning. Also, my trainer of which has 16 years competition experience recomends it. I only say this to bring back a very important point:
When competing try EVERYTHING IN ADVANCE!!! Don't leave it to question, don't leave it to luck! Try it. Str8 adds water I'm the opposite.
Adonis, Go buy some tanners and try them now. Go to the gym with it on and ask if you look good or rediculous. Most people will be honest.
Good Luck!

being black you don't really have to tan, especially if you love your skin tone. but it's proven that the darker you are, the moer dense you look and the more the oil will improve your appearance.
hope is the first step on the road to discouragement

I would tan, but the key is to not get burned. If you do tan, itll give you a good glow on stage instead of a flat color...
