I'm about 6 weeks after surgery. I am to continue with PT and I will be re evaluated in a month. 3/27 next appt. so i guess its 5 weeks. So another little while of this, I know it will all be worth it, just gettin sick of it ya know..

hey guys. i'm glad to see everybody is doing well, except for that 11k bill. <-ew
today i had my surgery. things are better than expected i think. i had a stretched tendon, the doc said rehab should be quicker. i have a nerve block in for the next 36 hours so there isnt any pain, but i cant move anything in my right arm so this message is taking some time.
ryan, its all about patience man it will all be worth it.
al-5 more weeks isnt bad at all for only twice a week.
curt-way to keep positive, im sure i speak for everybody in saying i appreciate it.

Staying fit after surgery
Hi all! I've been following these posts for about a month. I am less than 48 hours out of surgery where they fixed a tear in my labrum, had to reattach my labrum to the bone (it was 3/4 torn off), and had to do a capsule reconstruction (shrink it). I dislocated it about 5 years ago but because I was a college athlete (xc & track) didn't do anything about it. It's been bugging me for a long time and back in September (graduated college in May) joined a swim team to start training for triathlons and it just got worse from there.
I've always been into lifting and can't wait to get back to working out and running again. My big concern is getting really out of shape or putting on a lot of weight since I've always been on the leaner side due to activity. Does anyone have any advice for what they did or have been doing to stay in shape? Your posts have been a huge source of support during the countdown to surgery and let me know a little of what to expect. So any advice would be appreciated.

My plan (getting surgery on Left shoulder for torn labrum on March 11th), is to take a week off or so from doing anything physical after I get the surgery done. Depending on how I'm feeling, I will try to be working legs by doing bodyweight squats, bodyweight lunges, and will be working my Right arm (not the surgically repaired one obviously) doing various rows, curls, raises and will be doing one armed wall pushups where I am doing a sort of pushup against a wall with just the right arm. Nothing too strenuous, just some things to keep my body somewhat active and burning calories. I will add some walking in there as well. I will try to keep a diet that is of maintenance calories for me so I don't shrink too much, yet I don't get too soft either.

know what ya mean Bigal, i'm on week 10 now myself and have about 5 more to go before i'm on my own. my rom and strength is good and getting better all the time and i have some pain yet but nothing too bad, just soreness really, no sharp pains. good luck with it and soon you will be back at it.

hello everyone. Hope you are all healing up nicely! I went to see a surgeon on monday. He said that he couldnt operate since my shoulder was still badly inflammated and that it was holding a lot of blood. Turns out i dont have a partial tear ive got a biceps subluxation and MRI arthrogram showed posterior/anterior labrum tear. Im scheduled to go see the surgeon in two or three months. This is ****..in those two months i could have rocevered slightly! does anyone have any experience with this sort of stuff?

Coach----- I can't help you there, I've gained weight while going through this, unfortunately I hurt my shoulder as I was just beginning my transformation.
Al--- Thanks, the only problem i'm having is moving arm across my body, everything else is going as scheduled. 10 weeks and still pain, ok I was getting a little worried there. Thanks again.
warbird---let us know those results
Beef--- Unfortunatly it seems to take for ever to get that first appt, 3-4 mos sounds a little long to me-you should maybe call another surgeon or call them and see if they can get you in sooner.
Watcher--- be carefull man, don't overdo it to early.
Kev--- at 18 youve got plenty of time to grow, don't get down, rehab and get back to it.
Rehab 3x per week now, going good, some soreness, and very little rom across body, all other rom is good. Strength a little down, doing some bicep tendon exercises now as i may have tweaked something in there which caused decreased strength, it was a little up last session, but not where it was at before. Keep working and everything will get better. Good luck everybody, keep on keepin on. You can "Shoulder" the load....

How was the hockey game? Uh... (keeping on topic) did you keep your shoulder safe during the trek to your seats and back out to your car? I recall reading about other Shoulder Surgery Journal participants falling and reinjuring their arms/shoulders.

Anybody care if a one-arm-in-a-sling chick chimes in? My shoulder surgery was a week and a half ago. Torn supraspinatus and they also got rid of a huge bone spur. Painful recovery, don't you think? Still on the vicodin so am an awesome driver on that stuff. j/k

Of course not. Women are welcome to post in this thread at any point. Shoulder injuries and surgeries occur in both males and females. We don't discriminate
Shoulder feels great in Florida. I'm on my spring break from school and it feels amazing. Been doing my at home exercises and man do those help. DO THOSE EXERCISES, YOU WILL FEEL A LOT BETTER FASTER! (sorry for the caps, but sometimes people don't listen!) I have full range of motion, but certain stretches give me some dull pain. Still can't lift anything too heavy, I can feel it if I do. Hope everyone is recovering well, can't wait for PT to be over though.

Thanks boys, think I'll take you up on a question I have... When did you feel noticeably better, energy-wise, post surgery? Currently I am on day 11 and am waiting for my usual energy to return. I'm eating well and getting rest, so come on already! What gives? (sorry for calling you "boys", just having some fun!)

RYAN--- Its because of the Barometric Pressure, I know it sounds funny, but you know how people with joint problems say "feels like rain". Its nnot the rain its the pressure, the pressure stays pretty level in Fla. thats y you feel good. A guy at rehab said today he was in Florida for a couple weeks and he had no pain.
TRISH---- I never really had any energy problems, maybe just the first couple days because I was'nt sleeping too good. Al made a good point it could be the pain meds. Good Luck.

Posting that question must have solved the energy question because last evening I just felt a turning point. Not like I'm going to go run a triathalon or anything but just plain felt different/better.
PT this morning went really well, am getting my range of motion back very quickly. I agree with a previous poster that the post-PT icing is the BEST part of a day's session!
Also decided to try and cut back to half a pain pill when I take it, which is only morning and night (vicodin). Really hate taking the stuff, so I'll be super glad when I'm off it and onto tylenol/ibuprofin, then eventually nothing.
The PT said that RC surgery is one of the most painful surgeries to recover from. Do you guys agree? I don't have much to compare it to.

I would say yes to one of the most painful shoulder surgeries to recover from, but out of all you can have, I don't know. It's definitely worse than a labrum tear surgery.
BigAl, thanks for that info. I was told it would feel better down here, but no science behind it. Not complaining though, it feels amazing.
My energy came back rather quickly. It's a lot of mental work to make yourself feel energized, also coffee helped

None of you guys tried working your UN-Operated arm out lightly? I'm NOT talking heavy here, I'm just saying like, exercise bike, bodyweight squats, with the not-operated arm I would do light rows, curls, raises, etc. , any of that? Just to keep my metabolism raised so I don't turn into a fat ass.
Maybe I was misunderstood, I'm not going to work out or stress in any way, the arm I am getting repaired.. Well not until physical therapy anyway. I don't see how me working out my not-operated arm out slowly, controlled, and lightly (not using jerking movements, etc.) will harm my operated shoulder.
I would think that some light workouts that don't involve the repaired arm would help out slightly with recovery through increased overall blood flow.
Surgery is one week from today. Obviously I really can't wait to recover but also, I'm curious to see how much damage is in there. The doctor said it was a "small tear in the front of the labrum" according to the MRI but those are notorious for not showing the whole picture, as an arthroscope is the only true way to see exactly what's up.

i have been doing a fairly complete and heavy routine since 2 weeks post op on everything but my operated shoulder. it's a great thing to do and will help you immensely. for me it has helped in many ways and one that stands out is how much i'm not over eager to do more than i have to with my rehabbed shoulder, it's giving me patience for sure. good luck man
