Hope everyone had a good new year. I did!! 5 days and counting until surgery. It's getting really painful lately. Plus I can't take anything for pain because of the blood thinning properties, so that can't be helping.
I've still got my bands from PT, I'm sure i'll get more after but I'm definately going to use them to keep shoulders strong for the rest of my days. Good luck to everyone and hope you can "shoulder" the load....

Good luck Al! This thread has been a huge help.
Today I was doing a few exercises I did for my rotator cuff and after my shoulder swelled up so badly 800mg of Ibuprofen couldn't stop the swelling. It really is an odd injury, it doesn't really bother me unless I lift, it swells up way too much. I think I'll talk to the doctor about the possibility of Bursitis (Thanks Terp).
Do you guys think its a good idea to try some light rehab on my own or should I just completely let it rest? Over break, I've been lifting at a gym that doubles as a Physical Therapy place, so they might know what to do?
Ugh, hopefully this is the last time I ever injure anything from lifting. haha.

Good luck to all.
I had my surgery done in late September or early August for a severely torn labrum both front and back, also had a cyst growing in there. I was released to work out with light weights in early October and supposedly full force in early November. I overdid it a good bit in late November lifting 85 Lb dumbells on incline bench and had to lay off. I am back now but my shoulder is pretty sore. The weather makes this bad boy feel the pangs and I can not sleep with my arm anywhere other than by my side. If it is up or extended in any way the swelling gets it sore. I have spoken with a lot of people and they tell me this is common, so I am not stressing it. I do feel that the complete inactivity I went into after pushing too hard cause more stiffness than I would be experiencing as scar tissue probably began to swell into my nooks and crannies instead of being worn down by continual movement. I am now starting all of my shoulder rehab exercises again and feeling the scar tissue feel like it is beginning to go away. Keep up your rotator cuff work even if you get sore from over doing it. The rotator cuff work is such light weight it wont hurt you. Also remember Aleve and Ibuprofen are your friend. Hopefully after the winter is over my shoulder will loosen up some more, but I am not giving up. I am training for grappling and MMA so I have to have a good range of motion to be successful and safe. Good luck.
Anyone else have any input regarding the soreness after the surgery? How bad was it for you and what helped or did not help? Deep tissue massage or anything to break up scar tissue any of that? I am sure it would not only help me but Big Al and all the others who are getting surgery soon. Lets make sure they know what to expect. I know I thought it was going to be FIXED after the surgery and am only finding out now that the recovery is a long one that seems to have a decent amount of soreness to it. Knowing it is coming will be of great help for people so they don't panic when all is not magically better shortly after the surgery. By the way don't panic guys my shoulder is 100 times better than before the surgery and I would do it again in a heart beat. Don't worry by what I have mentioned here but I would have appreciated some reality before I got mine so I knew what was on the way.
Good luck guys, and get ready to be back in the saddle again.

hey all...this thread is magic.
about july or august last year i dislocated my shoulder. when i went to the surgeon he said its one of those thins that once you do it its only more and more likely to happen again and some people have a problem with it happening alot so surgery is often done...i havent had it happen again but he did say my shoulders and joints are VERY loose. my shoulders stil a bit sore sometimes and movement is definetly limited and sometimes when i make certain movements i feel like if a bit of weight went on it in the wrong direction it could pop out again easily.
Anway ...does anyone have any excersises that might help tighten up the shoulders? or could help make them stronger to try and prevent it from happening again and maybe having it at 100% again...
anyway thanks a lot and goodluck with all the people with surgerys coming up

Chris: Thanks for the input on pain after surgery. It's good to have a heads up so you know that even though it still hurts, it is healing. Glad to hear your shoulder is doing better.
Al: Thanks. How is everything going with your recovery? Thanks for the link to the exercises, that will come in handy.

2nd Shoulder Surgery on 1/7 too
BigAl,
I am also going under for arthoscopic surgery on 1/7. I dislocated my shoulder twice in 2007. Once in April and once in June. In June with the dislocation, I also chipped my humeral head which lead to open surgery. Well pretty much since 3 weeks after the surgery I have had frozen shoulder. This is with me going to therapy 3 times a week, etc. The doctor is going to go inside and cleanout some scar tissue to get me some ROM again. I am praying that this corrects my problem. I will be on a CPM machine (it literally rotates your arm) for at least 1 week for 4 hours a day. I am dedicated and willing to do anything just to get my arm back.
My new year resolution for 2007 was to get really built. I was 80% there! I was going to the gym too much. 5-6 days a week and this is what let to my injury. I have not been able to exercise much with a frozen shoulder. My goal is to get my shoulder back to normal and to smart exercise from there. I want to get back to where I was and then some.
Good Luck to you and everyone who is having and/or recovering from surgery.
I'll update you on my surgery on (hopefully) Monday.

Hope everything goes well with you too. Sounds like your shoulder is a little more serious than mine. Anyway good luck. I know what you mean about 2007. I really started to get going before my injury. I was going to gym at least 3 times a week, and also going to Tae Kwon Do class 2 or 3 times a week, was really starting to get in grove you know. I just want to get it fixed so I can make another run at it in 2008. I'm going to try and post monday also, we'll see though, maybe tuesday or thursday. Good luck man!!!

My Surgery on 1/7
BigAl, Terp and Ryan, thanks for the support. BigAl, how did your surgery go. Write us an update when you can. I said a prayer for you as I know this is not fun!
Regarding my surgery, overall I think everything went well (I hope I not jinxing myself). I am barely staying awake due to the medication, but I am typing with 2 hands now on my laptop in bed.
Surgery wise, he removed selective scar tissue, shaved my shoulder bone and analyzed my rotator cuff. It was sprained, not torn. After I was released, I got a CPM (Do an images.google.com on "CPM machine shoulder") delivered to my home. It repeatedly rotates your arm. On this machine, my flexion (lifting of the arm in front of you) reached 170 degrees out of the 180 machine max first try. My external rotation reached 95 degrees out of the 110 machine max first try. I had 90% flexion prior to surgery. I had MAYBE 5% external rotation. I just stay on the machine while it rotates it 170 upwards, then it comes back down and rotates it externally to 95 degrees. I will try to up those numbers later this week. Overall, outside of the pain, I am really encouraged. I go to PT everyday this week and revisit the doctor on Thursday. Thanks for everyone's support. I will give an update in a few days when I don't have as much pain medication in my system.
BigAl, once again, I hope your surgery went well!

Glad to hear it went okay! Thanks for the update Lucky no tear, congrats! Did you receive a pain pump or anything else? I am receiving this pump that has local in it that works on pressure. For 2-3 days it just releases local and is inserted inside my shoulder. I'm also receiving a brace thats connected to a machine that continually pushes cold water through. I'm wondering how these 2 things work post op. Thanks again!

pain pumps work very well! it's actually weird because you know it hurts but do not feel the side effects of pain medicine. i don't think you will need anything else while the pain pump is working, but when they take it off, you will probably need something like vicoden.
take it easy BigAl and relax, time to heal it up for good.Last edited by Al Swearengen; 01-08-2008 at 12:55 PM.
