I'm doing barbell, currently up to 115 lbs (ha) for 5 sets of 8. Incline is coming along too, but I'm more careful with that one since it's harder on the shoulders. I don't go down and touch my chest anymore, stop about 1-2 inches before. It works out the chest a lot more actually then when I actually went all the way down. All my other lifts are coming up rapidly but I have to remind myself to just take it easy. Hope all is good with you.
Al, sounds good man.
My shoulder does still get mad sore after I work out (day after) but it's not the same as before. All the muscles are coming back so it's just that type of soreness, not the ache pre-surgery. My only advice is to take it slow, and if you feel pain when starting back up lifting to just take it easy. It will be sore as a mofo when you start lifting so be aware. It used to ache like 2 hours after I worked out but that doesn't happen anymore, just muscle stuff. Good luck all!My recovery journal: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=123572831

Shoulder pain
HI everyone,
I've been following this thread since my shoulder has been killing me. Can't put my arm behind my back or pick up a coffee pot or any number of other things. Stopped working out when I couldn't push a weight machine without any weight. I've been living on Ibuprofen and finally got tires of the pain after about 9 months. So, saw my PCP who ordered a MRI. MRI can't be done since I have a previous injury that left a piece of lead birdhot, from a shotgun blast, behind my eye that is real close to the optic nerve. So he sends me to a sports med doc. After xrays and extremely painful moving of my shoulder he said he wants to scope it and fix whatever they find wrong.
So, if you all had to do the surgery over, would you??
Thanks
Lorri
PS: I'm scheduled for 6/6

glad to see you are working out again amigo.
i have heard the same from my Doc Al, hopefully for all of us it goes away sooner than later.
my shoulder still has some pain, maybe a 1 or 2 on the old scale. good to hear you will be back too work bud.
yes i would and having it scoped isn't bad at all unless they find something that needs fixing, then you will need to rehab it, but that's still better than wasting time with a torn cuff.Last edited by Al Swearengen; 05-23-2008 at 04:02 PM.

I am only about 10 weeks post op but I'd have to say yes. But you have to understand by no means did i rush into this surgery. I waited a real long time before finally going through with the surgery. I initially hurt my shoulder during lacrosse season in April of 2007, and waited 11 months for it to heal on its own (saw no results) and so finally had the surgery in March 2008. My shoulder already feels better than what it was pre-op, which demonstrates just how badly my shoulder was messed up.

11 weeks post OP
11 Weeks post op today. As usual, every week I notice my shoulder growing stronger. Pain is non existent in everyday life (I noticed that this went away somewhere around week 7 for me), but I do experience some discomfort or "clicking" at times. This is due mostly to a hard days work at pt or sometimes after a run.
I'm progressing well in pt. I'm able to do push-ups on my knees discomfort free. A couple of days ago I did 5 regular push-ups. There was no pain, but it didn't quite feel 100% right, I'm going to have to give that one a little more time. I'm doing DB curls (light weight, 5lbs for 20 reps and then 10lbs for 10 reps) to slowly get those muscle working again.
Man I'm itching to get back in that weight room! It's been over a year since I lifted upper body and I can feel that I?m almost there. I see my ortho at the end of June for my 14.5 week check up. I'm hoping that at that point he'll clear me for light lifting and I can finally get back into the gym somewhere in the beginning of July. I lost so much muscle mass without lifting upper body for more than a year plus, so I'm looking forward to getting it all back!!
How is everyone else doing?Last edited by Warrior18; 06-02-2008 at 09:33 AM. Reason: spelling error

Geez, its been a little while. I forgot how busy I was before my surgery. How is everybody doing. Summer weather is here and its time to get busy. Still having a little discomfort, similar to Al S. Cracking and popping, but nothing I can't handle. Every now and then, it pops and hurts where I go "OH SH!T" but thats not too often. So its going good, working out with lighter weights and higher reps for now, but overall, feeling real good.
Hope everyone is doing good!!

Surgery was on 1/7/08.... I would say I am still recovering, as Im not 100% where I was before my injury. Started therapy on 1/28 finished mid May.... Now I do extra work at the gym to keep rehabbing Another factor is you have your age on your side.... Good Luck and keep me posted on how your doing..

Thanks. They found osteoarthritis in my lower back which causes pain in the mid, upper and neck. I spoke to the doc and he said nothing can be done about it and its not that bad. Im a bit to young to have it. I jut dont know whats wrong with my shoulders im going to see a specialist next month. Good luck with your recovery, hope it goes well for you.

yo! I got a shoulder reconstruction in high school...
stiff arm on long run down sideline and the guy got a hold of my wrist and when he fell he had such a good grip that my arm dislocated at the shoulder...
broke ligament...
chipped bone surface (they say it will deteriorate when you get old if they don't fix the bone surface up when you really chip it up good)...
so I got BANKART REPAIR (spell?)
------------------------------------------------------------
this is what I can tell you:
1.) Months 1 to 7: Rehab...you get strong again really fast but upon introduction to sports you are still afraid to raise your shoulder above your head...
2.) Month 7 to Year 2: You are learning how to be athletic with the arm again...learning how to not put it in unathletic injury prone type positions in full speed sports...
3.) Year 2 to Year 3: Fine motor movement is back and you are even more athletic than before with it.
-------------------------------------------------------------
(this is why I think I am going to take Donovan McNabb in fantasy football this year in the 8th round for fantasy football...he will be coming into the 3rd year off his knee surgery late in the season...he will be a steal in the 8th round if he is still there)"...in sociology we were taught that 'white' people trying to do 'black' things were fought by society to the death...so how did John Riggins rush for 10,000 yards? look at his rookie football card...he had a gigantic red afro and native american face...people thought he was african american...I was actually told by at least five people as a child that did not know each other that he was half black...everyone I know was told he was half black too..."

13 Weeks Post OP
Today is 13 weeks post op. My shoulder is definitely feeling stronger. About 5 days or so ago I was able to do push ups for 3 sets of 10 without any pain. Today at PT, I cranked out 2 sets of 15 push ups, and my shoulder felt good! If anything my right (non-surgical shoulder) felt weaker! I don't know how that works out but it's true. Now my right shoulder was clicking and feeling a little odd. I don't know if I should be happy that me surgical shoulder feels good and is getting noticeably stronger, or frustrated because my other shoulder is starting to "click" on me a little bit. My physical therapist suggests that whatever work I do on my surgical shoulder, I should do on my right shoulder to strengthen it. Don't get me wrong, it is nothing serious, but I hate it when my nonsurgical shoulder clicks.
I've noticed that my shoulder no long bothers me when I run. I never had any real pain there, but there was a little discomfort. This is no longer present when I run...everything feels normal about that.
I see my ortho at the end of the month (about 11 days or so) and I'll let you guys know what he has to say. I'm optimistic because after doing these push-ups, I can see results that my shoulder is healing.
I also want to start taking supplements for my shoulder from here on out. I plan on taking Animal flex because I have heard nothing but good things. Is there anything else you guys recommend? Any fish oil or anything?
So how the hell is everyone else progressing? I'll keep you guys posted more on my recovery.
