I just recently started DLing sumo style myself. I like it a lot better than conventional stance and feel that it's also safer, but then, that's a matter of preference. It takes a bit to get used to. One tip I'd offer is to remember to bend your knees and use your legs, keeping a good arch. I hardly used my legs to sumo dead 315 a few times, even though I kept a good arch, and now my upper back is paying for it. Sore as hell... Just give it a shot and see what happens.

I too am thinking about switching to sumo deadlifts. Yesterday I maxed out on deads. I did:
135 x 10
225 x 5
315 x 5
405 x 1
455 x 1
475 x 1 was VERY hard, my whole body was shaking.
I was proud of my workout, but today my spine HURTS!!! It hurts to walk, and I can't bend over to tie my boots. It didn't hurt like this when I did 480 in a comp. I hope I didn't really mess anything up. This happened once before, but after 3 or 4 days I was fine. I'm thinking that doing sumo style might not put such a strain on my lower back. Any experts have some input here?

14power, if your back hurts that much I'd definately suggest switching to sumo. A more erect torso means less back problems. I actually made my full response to you a new thread, check it out:

Hope this is informative.

i have like 2000 posts at elite.. i 've read like everything.
Sumo also is harder off the floor, and harder at thel ockout than conventional (if done correctly).

So where the **** did Arioch go??!! I was waiting on his "Chains and Bands" article, since no one has written a definitive text on the subject.
Have to disagree with you there, bud.

Cool! As with any new lift (not sure if you've tried it before), it'll take practice to get the form & feel right. It's awkward at first, but trust me you'll love it. Mainly I do it for my back. With conventional I feel like my torso is inclined too far forward. I'd like to have a long lifting career, and any shear stress I can cut out of my form is good.
Shear - bad bad bad. leads to injury. As in when the knee comes forward of the toes in a squat.
Compressive - a force the joints & spine are made to bear. every lift should limit shear in favor of compressive. The only danger in the bench of shear is from excessive arching.

yeah there seems to be some drama on that board. They all live in roughly the same state, too.
hey dude if conv works for you that's great. I'm not knocking it, rather just outlining sumo's advantages.
