Bench Press Competition - Weider vs Muscletech.
At the 2005 Olympia expo at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas they held a new event called the Gakic Bench Press Challenge.
The start of the event was hosted by none other than Mr. Bob himself. After introducing why everyone is sitting in chairs in front of a stage (the reason I say this is because I was walking by random people at the expo and half of the people did not know why they were sitting down in front of the stage. As soon as Bob came onstage and introduced what is going on, at least half of the people left their chairs!), Bob introduces the new Flexxy Awards.
The categories were as followed:
• Athlete Of The Year (male and female)
• Rookie Of The Year
• Most Improved
• Vanguard Award
Here is who won:
Athlete Of The Year
Male: Darrem Charles
Female: Monica Brant
Rookie Of The Year
Capriese Murray
Most Improved
Branch Warren
Vanguard Award
Shawn Ray
If any of these are incorrect, send it to Will at will@bodybuilding.com. These were off the top of my head and it was a long weekend.
While there was much hype of this being a big new event they failed terribly to put it together. Half of the guys on-stage knew there was a script but failed to stay with it and insisted on taking jabs at one another. Some of the highlights were:
Jeremy Freeman doing 54 reps.
Phil Heath did 44.
Nasser did 15. - lol
Team Muscletech officially beat Weider by over 25 reps. Roland could not take this so he tried being funny and talking like Arnold and calling out the other host to a final showdown. Roland busted out 17 reps, so did the other guy. At first, the other host (Christen?) would not do it. He was all ‘I just had surgery and I can’t bench heavy’. I think he is just a pretty boy cover model and 225 was his max, but he didn’t want anyone to laugh at him. Well, we still did. Pretty boy did 17 reps (barely). Then Roland could not take it any longer and just gets under the bench and busts out 15 more reps and is all trying to shove it in the other guys face. It was like watching two little kids argue about how their dad could kick their dad’s ass. Lol
Overall, I would give the show a 3.5 out of 10.
It was horribly orchestrated, unscripted with little to no humor, half of the time you could not understand what was going on onstage, their was way to many people on stage at any given moment, the cameras were very distracting and blocked most of the audience just so they could get a good shot ( http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/big/...ly_bench21.jpg) and much more. Hopefully they can get their act together next year and hire a new crew to run the events at the biggest bodybuilding show of the year (this includes the Mr. Olympia, Wildcard Showdown, Bench Press Competition, pre-judging, location of the shows). I have seen better bodybuilding shows in Boise, Idaho!
Check out some pics at:
http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/2005oly_bench1.htm
On the 3rd page you will find some shots of Gene's failed bench press. I was in the front row at the very end (closest chair to him) and it was horrible! I wish Gene all the luck and I wouldn’t be very surprised if we don’t see him for awhile.
A full write-up will be available soon.
Thanks,
Will

Still.. 54 reps is a hell of a lot of reps, even partial. Great endurance for someone that size who doesn't train for it specifically.

If you watched the bench press comp, the guy who only did 17 reps was doing his reps nice and slow, all the way down to his chest, pausing then a full extension. The dude who did 54 reps was doing, like bill said, partial reps from hell. His were the worst, but every other competitor was doin ****ty partials as well, if it was a real bench press comp not a single one of those reps would hvae counted.
nonetheless tho, 54 partials is still an incredible amount, im just tryin to give the guy who did only 17 a little justice.

Haha, true 54 partials is alot. But I wonder how many he could have done for full reps? Did you see when took his shirt off? He looked very screwed up....i.e. not proportional at all...

Yeah, Freeman is never a top competitor in pro shows. Too big in the Atwood sense.

At least Roland is doing the actor thing now. Hell, he might even be off the juice. Nasser's lift, however, there is really no excuse for...

Was Nasser actually not capable of getting more than 15 reps? Or did he just bang out 15 and then leave?

Nasser being that weak seems kinda weird. I recall in the late nineties an article in flex where he was doing 200 pound pullovers and 800 pound squats, then again that could have been fake.....If he wasn't just messing around then it's pretty sad that he has the strength of a sophomore in highschool.

In Nasser defense he was the only one doing perfect bb reps, the bar touched his chest every time and had a good range or motion,he looked like he was strugling at the end and gave an excuse why he did no do more but i could not under stand him..

you guys do realize not everybody is built for endurance
I could dip w/ +120(@230bw) for reps but I couldn't do anymore than 10bodyweight dips or 10dips w/ +45.

6) Christian Boeving 17 reps (Muscletech)
7) Nasser 15 reps (Weider)
WOW, that is not alot for sure...my best is 27 and not cheating like Freeman did...maybe he could have used a bench shirt...lol...next week, I will try 225 for partial reps like girly boy, and see if I can beat it...probably not...lol

Yeah the 15 reps for Nasser seems pretty low even if he did do perfect ones.

Apalling
Ok, you can see my size from my sig (6'2, 91kilos, ecto).
On my last ergomax cycle (2 months ago) I could do the following on bench
100kilos X 8 reps unassisted (full reps). Thats 220 pounds for the non metric.
I'm a ****n skinny guy. If nasser STRUGGLES to do double that number of reps, there is definately something wrong. From where I am standing thats "LIGHT WEIGHT" as Ronny would say. Unless the 225 was kilos, then I am incorrect. IF its pounds, damn, there are some weaklings out there.

Yes, I know, lets use this thread as an ego boosting thread and all claim how we do more and they suck. You guys seem to be forgetting the fact of the matter is, these guys are bodybuilders. They realise the best way to build mass isn't to just try and lift as heavy as they can, or for as many reps. They train for mass and mass only. It's all about their mind muscle connection, who gives a f-ck what weight they put up if they're weighing 250 and shredded? It's like PLers having a jest bodybuilding show, then people commenting, oh no, he doesn't have very good tie ins, he isn't at all proportionate or symetrical. Seriously.
