Weird situation, advice wanted!!
Ok so here's the deal. Ever since I was a kid Ive wanted to be a Marine but up until a few months ago I was never serious about it and fluctuated from being fit to FAT every couple of yrs. Thing is my "fit" was never fit it was maintaining a decent weight with what I now know to be malnutrition. A friend of mine has a husband who is a Marine recruiter and recently he's started meeting me at the gym at 0615 to workout, we primarily did lat pull downs(to build up towards my pullups), and all kinds of excercises for my abs(Triple threats, regular old crunches etc), and of course RUNNING(first session I couldnt even run for a mile 3 sessions later yesterday morning I ran for 2 so im making progress). My diet isn't hardcore locked down(having each of my meals planned out for the week) but I DO stay at 2200-2300 calories per day when my maint. calories are supposedly somewhere between 2800-3000 daily depending on which "equation" you use to arrive at the number. Right now Im 5' 11" and weigh in at a mammoth-like 235lbs(down 4 from last week). I was wondng if anyone could pony up some advice on other excercises I could do to help with my overall level of fitness other than the stuff that only counts towards my pft(running, crunches, pullups). As far as supplements im taking 100% Whey gold standard and GNC Mega Men's so I'm getting my protein and vitamins. I also am drinking enough water, a lil more than a gallon a day if you count the water content in my protein shakes. Any advice/words of encouragement is welcome. Im trying to be an Officer so I have a LONG way to go but I think im on the right track and moving in the right direction. If you read all of this Thanks.
edit: Im at the gym Monday Wednesday and Friday primarily but im trying to squeeze in time today and thursdays for some work out time as well since I need to try to get fit enough to put my OCS package together by next semester. Also im not so concerned about weight since ther is a waiver for that I just need to be able to get a high score on my pft.

Add the adjective qualified in there. You don't wanna get stuck w/some monkey the gym just hired who got his certification for 100 bucks off gym-certification.com and won't get his NSCA for another 4 years.

whats up, im a marine at camp lejuene, so if anyone is "qualified" to answer this, i think I should be able to hook you up. First of all. Your recruiter is on the right track, he as you mostly doing excercises to help your pft. But, you stated that you want to be an officer, so its gonna take a little bit more than that. I would (to start out with) do alot of running. Running is a HUGE part of the excercises that you will do at OCS. You will also need to drop down to about 190 at least. (Remember, you need to be within Marine Corps height/weight standards to enlist, but you always want to be well below that to provide some cushion for yourself.) Also, instead of just doing pull-up type excercises, try whole body routines including back, tris, biceps, etc. As an officer you need to be at a level of fitness high enough so that you will not only do well on the pft, but get respect from your troops as well. Nobody has any respect for out of shape officers. Anywayz, good luck and keep postin if you need more help.

Thx for the advice, yea my uncle and all of the other Marines around me keep driving home that if im going to be an Officer i have no choice but to lead from the front. Ductus Exemplo as it were(the motto on the OCS crest). What kind of full body routine did you have in mind ? Thx again for the responses.

Research somthing called HIT, High Intensity Training. This should be exactly what you need.

i don't know much about OCS, but i know that the training you will go through will require you to drink more than 1 gallon of water a day. keep the running up, and work not only on the weights, but if you know of any strong-man type exercises, they'd be a good idea too. lifting in the gym will get you size and strength, but the strongman stuff will get your strength functional. they'll work your gripping, lifting, and carrying endurance, which going through boot was something i wished i'd had more of.
the height/weight standards are pretty strict and kinda bogus. i understand the way they do it, but the method for measuring bodyfat is inaccurate and outdated. DO try to maintain within your standard, but if you are over, make sure you have the physique to back it up.
maybe someday i'll see you in the fray.
