I just bought 300lb used CAP weight set off CL and the condition of the weights are pretty decent.
Just little rust spots here and there.
I have no problems with the rust and want to save money by not repainting them.
I just wanted to know if there are any negatives to using rusty weights.

As long as your Tetanus shot is up to date, than you'll be ok.

be careful to not get any dust in your eyes or inhale it. sometimes clapping rusty dumbells together will cause some dust to come out.

a couple of rusty spots wont' do anything.
if it annoys you, there are some good threads in this forum about cleaning up rust.

Automotive stores like eastwood have rust encapsulators,you just brush over the rust,and your done.

I was just in the hospital with a staph infection in my leg. It was either from clanging rusty weights together or from crawling on my hands and knees in chicken sht. Your guess is as good as mine. My tetanus shot is now up to date!Originally Posted by HardKore79

Is it bad to use soap and water to clean if coke was spilled all over the weights making them sticky?

Yeah, the rust flakes will fall into your eye while you're doing overhead presses (dumbbell flat bench, decline/incline press). Not a lot of people can continue their set at 100% with a flake of rust in their eye. Also you might go blind in that eye, whatever, you have a spare eye, but it sucks to have to stop your set 1/2way through, you know?Originally Posted by brian_07
