How long does it take to build muscle?

If you start working out with weights and you are working out heavy three times a week....how long does it take to build muscle???

    A month? Two months....several months???

I know this probably varies with each person but let's just say your hurting between each workout so your probably doing something right.

Assuming you are doing it right (and, no, hurting is not an indicator that you are), you should see changes within one month.

I agree. If you eat right (quality food) and train properly, you can gain 1-3 pounds of muscle a month until you hit your max.

    Doing it right?

Meaning you are splitting and you are using correct form on each exercise?

Hurting because I haven't worked out in so long!

I kicked up the weight so that my last set is too hard.. almost impossibleon each excercise.

Doing it right = using good form, a well-designed program, weights that are challenging to you and good nutrition.

DOMS can occur any time you do something your body isn't used to... or when you are not fully warmed up... or when you workout longer than you usually do... or...

There can be any number of reasons for DOMS -- it is not necessary to have DOMS in order to have had an effective workout, nor is DOMS necessarily a sign of an effective workout.
