Dieting and Sleeping...

Dieting down is fun! I enjoy every minute of it. When it is my low calorie day I find myself waking up at 3am because I am so HUNGRY. Even if I had just gone to sleep at 11pm. So sometimes I will start eating my breakfast at 3am. I was just wondering IS THIS NORMAL>? I don't mind it.. just wondering if there is anything I can do to correct this problem...and if anyone else has similar experiences?

that's a good thing.

actually waking up at 3am is a good thing. Many athletes set their alarm to wake up and drink a shake. (not necessary for figure) however, since you are up already, Just premix a shake and drink it when you get up at 3am, get some protein in your system and also breakup that overnight fast. Then go back to sleep.

Nancy, I (respectfully) have to disagree with you. One should not wake during the night because they are hungry. (If they do wake it should only be momentarily & then immediately fall back to sleep).

IMHO here is what I beleive is happening to D13 & how she should rectify the problem.

On her low carb days she is placing herself in a hypoglycaemic state( Hypoglycemic = low blood sugar).(Healthy people can occasionally have glucose levels in the hypoglycemic range without symtoms or disease(diabetes)). Most healthy adults adapt being in a hypoglycaemic state by increasing Blood Sugar through glycogenolysis( breakdown of glycogen into glucose) or through gluconeogenesis( converting protein into glucose).

Glycogenolysis is stimulated by the hormones Glucagon & Epinephrine(adrenaline). If D13 is waking it is most likely because Epinephrine is stimulating Glycogenolysis, & also waking her at the same time.

Their are a few remedies for this problem. 1st: eat Low GI (glycemic index) carbs prior to bed. If that does not work have starchy carbs at dinner.

Some other possibilities: Magnesium deficient (take magnesium orotate OR magnesium taurate 500 mg at supper & 500mg before bed) , stop eating within 2 hours before going to bed. ( 3-4 hours is too long), she may be in adrenal fatigue.

Hope this helps!!!

P.S: Hi Lindsay

P.S: Hi Lindsay
A couple of months ago, I began limiting complex carbs to my first few meals of the day, and low glycemic carbs to my last three meals, and it has worked very well. So I have to agree, that timing of different carbs, can make a difference. I had to tweak meals awhile to determine this. However, I don't limit my carb intake. T
