Originals or covers?
OK, you head out to a pub or hotel for a night out, there is a band playing that night. The band is average (and unknown, for the sake of this thread)
Would you rather hear them play their own original songs all night or would you like to hear good covers?
This isn't a question about artistic integrity. You're out for a good time, which music is going to help that?

I bet that band plain white t's tried playing hey there delilah at their gigs and nobody gave a **** until like two years later when it was shoved down their throats.

Yep, my bandmates and I discuss this regularly. The crux is, the bloke who manages the bar wants to see the punters raging and more often than not, it's the covers (that everyone knows) that gets everyone going. We have a couple of originals that go right off but afterwards people will ask "which Nirvana/Metallica/Zep song was that?"
Hopefully a few more people will vote and give me an idea of a more widespread opinion

I would like to hear both.
4-5 covers, then an original and repeat

Originals.
9/10 times I can't stand covers , even good bands that do them. Korn comes to mind here, they shouldn't even bother.
Your situation is tough , I have empathy for ya. Most people in bars want to hear a Ac/dc song followed by a metallica song and don't give a **** about your new originals. We have the same problem atm, I play drums in a band and we have "in bloom" by nirvana and the rest are originals but it does hurt ya in the bar scene.
Like everyone else said mix it up , maybe go 1 for 1 or something like it?

I don't like them at all , but most (at least around here) would consider them "good" as in above the weekly playing at bars.
No I don't like korn , I think they are mediocre. They def should not do covers though.

When it comes to big name bands doing covers-some succeed and some absoulutely suck (more often)
A pub band doing covers though.....if they put in a good effort (you can tell when they connect with the music) it's usually cool.

Most bar bands make their money off of playing songs the masses can sing/dance/recognize.
Signed bands do covers to, most of the time, murder the songs they grew up listening too.
