o/t having my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow. should i take advil before?
Hello! It's been a long while since I logged into these forums. I'm having 2 wisdom teeth removed tomorrow, and the other two next week. I'm really nervous about it, considering I've never had any invasive work done in my mouth before. I've been reading all kinds of stories and people's experiences, trying to prepare myself for what's to come. I'm giving myself the rest of the week off work, but I'm hoping to return on Thursday.
The teeth are not impacted. I have a cavity on the upper right one, because i can't reach with the toothbrush. I'm having them removed because i'm going to be getting braces, and because of the cavity.I'm not having any sedatives. I'm just going to have local freezing with the needle.
My question is... I read some where that some people take 3 advils an hour before they have their wisdom teeth removed, to help reduce swelling. I've also read that it might not be a good idea because it can cause more bleeding. I don't know. Has any one here had their wisdom teeth removed? did you take anything before the procedure?
Thanks for reading this!

Can you call your dentist and ask what they recommend? Personally (I'm a student nurse), I wouldn't take anything because it may impact upon the anaesthetic they plan to use, and as you mentioned, advil can increase bleeding as well. Plus, you want to be able to take painkillers as soon as the surgery is over and you can only take them every 4-6 hours so you would have to wait.
Good luck with the surgery!

Exactly....
Don't take anything unless the dentist tells you to.... and ask him what you can take before it....
I don't taken anything and I am really hard to numb... last time when I needed root canal done, I had to go back twice as after 8 injections of whatever including 2 straight into the nerve he couldn't numb me enough and he had to get something else and I came back.... as non medical people we don't know about the interactions of different drugs....

So I called my dentist, and he told me i could take it. He doesn't want me taking any aspirin, but he said that more and more doctors are advising their patients to take advil before they have their wisdom teeth out. (Without anesthesia). He said it was up to me. I have to be there in 45 minutes. I'm so nervous. I'm only getting the needle freezing. Nothing else. I'll be back to share my experience.... and then next tuesday i'm doing the other side. Joy. :0)

My son, 15 yo just had all 4 removed a couple weeks ago, a week before Thanksgiving in fact! They were impacted and he was in serious pain (for a boy ).
The told him nothing at all, not even water 6 hours prior to the surgery but he was scheduled for the antesthesia that knocks you out completely.
I had mine out when I was 18, all I remember is eating tons of pudding & icecream but losing weight because I didn't feel like eating most of the time.

So I had them pulled. I took the advil before hand. I have absolutly no noticable swelling. I did, however bleed too much.
I am in no pain what so ever. I am taking the pain meds as advised by him. Although i don't think I really need them.
I'm going to get the other side pulled out next tuesday. I'll do that side without advil, and see how it goes.
Thanks for the responses!

my experience:
no advil
no anestesia
in and out in an hour
no swelling
so much pain after the novacane wore off that I, a 25 year old woman, called my grandmother crying while downing percocet every 4 hours.

Wow....
Nobody is getting any anaesthesia?
Or do you mean not a general... that you are still getting the locals?
So no pain and then the novocaine wears off? You must try root canal on no anaesthesia.... it's great...

Two what?....
These girls are hard if you're having wisdom teeth out with no anaesthesia.... me personally, if someones going to rip any tooth out, never mind one that's likely to be everywhich way in my jaw, they better give me something to numb the pain.... if not, it's called torture.... I've had unnumbed nerves drilled into not fun... and I got them to stop.... you would have to tie me down for any more than that...
