    Personal trainer...?

I'm not sure where else to post this, so here goes. Is anyone out there a personal trainer? I'd like to become "licensed", and was wondering if anyone else out there does it, how you go about getting your license, and how the income is? I live in Ohio. Thanks.

there are 1001 different certifications out there, but only a few respectible ones . you really need to do your research for your local area to get a better fix.......but really, p/t'ing is just about charisma - making people stay and getting more in. That's why you see so many fat/skinny non-trainres as personal trainres, because, for the most part, it's about charisma and sales generation

Thanks for the advice. I think I can get the charisma going, hopefully anyway. Is anyone on this board in this field? I would think there has to be someone here who does this. Anyone?

How well you do as a personal trainer depends on many things. Charisma is important, but so is your knowledge, education, salesmanship, if your area is receptive to personal training, and the demographics/income level of your area. Most of us hate the "sales" end of being a trainer, but you do have to sell yourself to a certain extent, but charisma is also part of that. All the charisma in the world won't do you or your clients much good if you can't get them real and lasting results, so a good education should be your priority. You need to have a solid base of knowledge in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, program design (and not what you read in the magazines), etc. This doesn't necessarily mean getting a degree, but you may need to study more than the basic personal training certifications have in their study guides and manuals.

Now, concerning licensing.......a license isn't a requirement anywhere in the US yet, but you should get certified by one of the top certifying agencies. There's dozens of certs out there, but most are of questionable value to put it mildly.
The "gold standards" in the industry are the American College of Sports Medicine(ACSM)-HFI and the National Strength and Conditioning Association(NSCA)-CSCS, and after that, the good certs would include NSCA-CPT, American Council on Exercise(ACE)-CPT, ACSM-CPT and International Sports Sciences Association(ISSA)-CFT.
There are many others that make a lot of claims about how great they are, but when you look at their curriculum, testing procedures, affiliations etc., they fall far short of the top certs.

The requirements for obtaining these certs varies, so you may want to look up their websites and see which fits you the best.
Also, if you plan on working for a gym, you will need to see which certs the gym recognizes.

They basically "sell" certificates online, you can become "certified" by paying 50 bucks and filling out a 10 question, open book test.

I usually only buy Muscular Development, but I read a column where Charles Glass, the "guru" himself, told a guy that there's no way a natural guy could train a bodypart more than once a week.

Personal trainers are good if you are one or a combination of the following:

    1. Illiterate
    2. Have no hands, arms, etc (think about it)
    3. Severly retarded
    4. Some jappy bitch spending daddy's money (jewish american princess)
    5. like hearing someone talk about themselves
    6. like talking and not working out but don't have any friends at the gym
    8. suffer from chronic short term memory loss
    9. don't know how to count
    10. truly hard core about training and don't want to use precious energy to adjust the machines/ benches
    11. have an affinity towards the words/ phrases: good job, one more, and alright
    12. always need to be the center of attention
    13. don't know how to write your own workout journal or just have bad penmanship

lol, I'm not disagreeing. In my area though, there is a new gym that's recently opened and they had an add for personal trainers. They are going to start interviewing next week. The guy that runs the place said he was working for a gym in the area before he started running this one. He said he worked 8 hours a day for the gym and then personal trained for 3 hours a day a lot of times. He said there is a real demand for them, and it's all about getting the clients, and that he could see me being able to do it for 6-7 hours a day if that's what I wanted to do. Oh yeah, did I mention he said they get paid $35 an hour?

Go talk to Khan Paulsen or PTAaron at Intense Muscle and ask them how and what they did to get certified.

    I'm not ripping on personal trainers and actually have a few friends who are. I'm just placing commentary on those who require their services. It kind of reminds of this quote from Good Will Hunting;

"See, the sad thing about a guy like you is in 50 years you're gonna staht doin some thinkin on your own and you're gonna come up with the fact that there are two certaintees in life. One, don't do that. And Two, you dropped a hundred and fifty grand on a ****in education you coulda got for a dollah fifty in late chahges at the public library "

Morgan: What do you want me to do?
Chuckie: I mean, what's wrong with you? You'll hump a baseball glove?
Morgan: I was just using it for clean-up.
Chuckie: Stop jerking off in my mother's room!
Morgan: Ain't there another VCR in the house?

while I am not coming to the defence of personal trainer I am rushing to the defense of trainers.First thing right off the bat, there are 2 different fields that get intercrossed incorrectly, there's bodybuilding and there's strength training THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. Also everyone in this field has different ideas of whats correct, what is correct is what is backed by science. While I have had disarguments with many people here, point is I know my stuff, I've studied this more then the regular people here. In another year I'll have a masters degree in Performance Enhancement. All that out of the way here's my theory

First off, like most guys people in the gym all say the same things " i don't need a trainer, they don't know anything, there clients don't get results" Yes that is true for personal trainers. People who get there education from these boards and magaizines, it is not however true for performance ehnhancement trainers or trainers. There is a difference

Yes I understand majority of people here want to look better and if bodybuilding is your sole purpose that is great, same goes or o-lifting or powerlifting. But people (read GUYS) look at trainers and say "oh they don't know anything, there not doing 16 sets for biceps" and while it is true. I myself see personal trainers who don't know ****, and are fat or toothpick skinny. I understand where the bad rap comes in. But then you have trainers. I work in a corrective exercise facility what that means is I get people with knee or ankle or any other sort of injur and not only do I have to rehab/prehab that which requires an insane knowledge of both biomechanics and kinesology but I also have to either give them daily strength or get them big/strong/lean/faster. So you mean to tell me I'm on par with an ACE certified trainer. Again don't lump everyone together

Now take that further, there's people that work at my facaility with me, that while they have degrees, they know NOTHING about strength training and they scoff at anything "isolation(there really is no such thing) or bodypart specfic" yes they may know alittle exercise science but just because you can tell me about the Cori cycle doesn't mean you know how to get someone where the yneed to do. matter fact we have one guy who can recite any exercise science text yet his clients have stayed plateued for months

Now another side to it, alot is in who pays you. I work in an upscale area and my clients are either cancer survivors, amatuer athletes, rehab cases or worst of all former CEO's and current wealthy businessmen, these guy want to do what they want. I can honestly say I have NEVER give anyone a rest period, everything is antagionst pairing because these people don't wanna hear about resting between sets and worst of all they don't wanna hear that they shouldn't do leg extensions because "it really make my knee feel stable". Again don't lumb everyone, there are different circumstances

Last point, please don't think you can learn everything on BODYBUILDING.COM because it's just bodybuilding, not strength training, there's a whole other world then bodybuilding which, when done right can make you look better then pure bodybuilding methods. While there are some very knowledge people here, such as defaint1, domink(who should change his name to ZatorsikyScienceandPratice) and others, this is not the mecca, matter of fact majority of the posts are flat out laguhable

All i'm trying to say is, please don't lump everyone together, yes the majority of trainers you see don't know ****, this morning a trainer at my gym that i work out at, told a client, "do cardio everyday" as he proceeded to put her on the pec deck"

My point is, don't think you know more then everything, while the majority of trainer have the same resrarch as you(boards/mags) and while the majority don't know ****. Look at yourself in the mirror before you judge
