WOW there's only a couple of people interested in martial arts? LOL
there should be more, as the common bodybuilder is susceptible to agile small fighters

I'd say Muay Thai mixed with Judo or wrestling so that you have a good base of striking and grappling!
TKD is Useless for self defense. Try doing a high round kick to a guy's head in a bar fight and see how successful it is. Not a good style! But great athleticism displayed by its practitioners, that's for sure!

Sonny, if you have facts to back up that comment fine.. but realistically, TKD is a great art for self defense.. its not all about flashy kicks..
TKD is an all round art.. would be great for hockey, gives excellent balance, self control, and fitness.. as well as sonny said great athleticism.

Well in the bar situation i would rather take a Boxing/Wrestling combo rather then TKD
or even Judo/Muay Thai...
but not TKD

In my opinion, TKD is one of the GREATEST art forms ever. And indeed, properly trained practitioners CAN defend themselves. Now, I may be unaware of other teaching methods, but 99 % of the TKD schools here focus almost 95% of their instruction on KICKING. In my opinion, real life self defense involves more UPPER BODY prowess, and I also feel that using too many kicks, where you are on ONE foot for a split second, is still too much of a risk to be taken against a serious streetfighter.
There is a local bar here where the head bouncer is a black belt in TKD and he has since retired after trying to throw a high round kick against a huge weightlifter during a scuffle one night. Needless to say, that split second he was on one foot was all this guy needed to shoot in and lay a beating on him. Keep in mind this weightlifter was TOTALLY unschooled in any form of unarmed combat so you can only imagine what a truly schooled grappler or Thai boxer could have done.
TKDers are amazing athletes, and I'm sure a lot of them could really kick ass. But from what I've seen, not too many can. I am not trying to insult TKD as I know, many of it's practitioners are disciplined, hard working athletes who deserve just as much respect as other martial artists. But I still do not agree with it's overall effectiveness in regards to real life, self defense situations.

Your right in some respects, but as you may know, the actually translation of the words tae Kwon Do means, the art of hand and foot.
Schools SHOULD be teaching hand techniques as well if not more than foot techniques.
In the last tkd world championships I competed in, the polish team (overall winners) were distinct for thier excessive, fast and effective hand combat, same with koreans, and other successful teams. And you will notice when watching, that some of the tkd hand techniques are just as spectaluar, but of course more effective as the foot techniques.
I do hear what your saying.. and really what this discussion proves is that any well developed martial artist can defend themselves effectively when needed, no matter what art they practice :P

Actually i dont beleive that a better martial art exists. I beleive it's up to the artist to make it effective.....but thats just me...

They call is drunken boxing, part of shaolin training they can teach you it. Kinda like the movie drunken master, all I remember is almost all of the forms revolve around you holding your mug of beer and not spilling a drop while knocking out all your enemies, lol

Yeah, there is a drunken style of Kung Fu. Just watch Drunken Master with Jackie Chan and you'll see some. My Dad knows some of it, but he's more experienced in other forms of Kung-Fu like Choy Lay Fut, Wing Chun, etc.

its the mental aspect of tkd that makes it a weak self defense style. When you hit a boxer in the ring he will try to hit you back imideatly unless he is hurt or stunned. When someone hits or is hit in tkd tournements its like there is a moment when they step back and admire there work.Needless to say my cousin is a third degree black belt and i asked him to box me and he said know but id be game for some kick boxing (trying to intimidate me) so feeling cocky i said yeah sure.So anyway i just fake like im rushing in and when he thows a side kick i just stop and when he brings his foot back i snap him with a straight right and step to the side im about to get back into position when he says im done man im done.Just like that he was quiting i had a similar experience with someone from tay chi his girlfriend was there and to his credit he lasted a little longer.

the pointbeing that boxers and kick boxers build heart .When we go to the gym we dont just work on technique we get in there hit and get hit so we are more used to combat as a matter a fact i would go as far to say that in a street fight i would pick a seasoned street fight over a black belt in tkd. Also i do love watching tkd on tv they are great athletes
