June 7, 1928 - Nov. 22, 2007
Bodybuilding champion and Arnold Schwarzenegger trainer Reg Park passed away on Thursday from complications of metastatic melanoma. He was 79. Reg won his first major competition in 1949 when he became Mr. Britain. In 1951, he stunned the bodybuilding world by winning the Mr. Universe competition after only 3 years on the bodybuilding scene. His training was as Spartan as you can imagine, much of it spent lifting heavy dumbbells outside in his parent's garden, often under harsh weather conditions.
Noted as one of the strongest bodybuilders of his era, Reg played Hercules and other legends of might in a movie career that spanned the mid-1960s. In 1970, he lost a close-fought battle for the Mr. Universe crown to his protege the Austrian Oak. Reg was Mr. Universe in 1951, 1958 and 1965. He remains one of the great legends of bodybuilding and an inspiration to strength athletes past and present.
