I'm an English/Professional Writing & Communications double major and its kind of hard to say. There is some truth to it in that, all the readings you do and whatnot aren't teaching you a totally new concept like for example in math or the sciences, economics, most other disciplines you're constantly learning new concepts which are totally new and foreign and I guess in order to gain a proficiency in them you have to really focus and work hard at them for a while. Everytime I read a new book or an essay or anything I'm not doing something that is new so to speak. I know how to read, but what I'm doing is sharpening my skills in critical reading. Honestly, I'm in my 4th year now and the way I read something now is totally different than I used to. It is probably less work though because you get graded on essays you write and that often doesn't require a really detailed knowledge of the texts and you can get by with coles notes and just write the essay based on secondary sources. Fairly tough at times, but not insane. Some classes seem more interesting, like studying major cases, etc... Not for me though

My roommate is in political science but hes going the easy route and taking stuff like spanish 101 and french classes, instead of tough law courses.

I think that political science courses are the hardest. The sheer amount of INTENSE DENSE READING and the the ability to analyze the material is very difficult.

If you dont think so, try reading one of the most basic and famous works of all time, Karl Marx's Communist Manifesto. It's his easist reading. Read that and tell me you understand everything he's saying. Not the jist of it but everything, word for word.

I think the "no jobs in comp sci" is pretty misleading. Before the dot com crash, people without majors or certifications were getting 60K and up jobs in the bay area doing IT.
Now, you need to have a degree or some higher level certifications. Personally, I'm definitely going to intern next summer and make sure I have a job lined up for me when I graduate.

That **** is so boring though I've got 0 interest in that. I'm really not concerned with being rich someday, thats not what motivates me. I'd rather do what I enjoy and have an interest in, so long as I can get a job that pays the bills and offers a comfortable lifestyle that's fine by me. Whether I drive a Mercedes or Pontiac, live in a 2000 sq foot house vs. 4000, its really all trivial things in the bigger picture.

When you get to higher level econ courses, its all really hard math. We have some econ courses at our school that require 3 semesters of calc and linear algebra as pre-reqs..Its basically a math major..

you must be kidding, Karl max's boxs and theorist have lots of material to let you understand what they are, pli sci classes were one of easiest and most boring classes I've taken. Especially when the professor is an extremist, you only learn to shut up to get an A.

Cool, I got some good response from my question.
Yes, I am a poli sci major and I'm a senior. First thing I want to say is that intro Poli sci classes are a joke compared to the 400 level and above. The reading in upper level classes is freaking rediculous. And almost always it's super confusing big worded stuff. I took 2 politcal philosophy classes where we had to read people like Socrates, plato, Aristotle, John Locke, Rosseau, karl marx, hobbes and a fewothers. We didn't just review what they talked about, we read their books and had to decipher that **** ourselves. Pretty darn hard. I usually get assigned 50+ pages per class, but most upper level classes in any mojor are probably the same. The hardest poli sci class I have ever taken was a constitutional law class. We had to read famous cases and talk about them and whatnot. That was easy, what was hard was writing argumentative essay in legal brief form. We did four of them. Each one of my briefs was over 20 pages single spaced... 20 pages single spaced. 40 double space pages time four is 160 pages typed of one semester! That's a f-ucking book! No one can say that is easy, no one!

I say all this but I'm not trying to say poli sci is the hardest major because I don't know. All I do know is lots of people assume it's easy because they took poli 101, guess what every 101 in every major is easy. Every major is hard in different ways. I'm sure a physics major couldn't write a 20 page paper on brown v. board of education but on the same hand I couldn't do any of the math required for explaining Bernulies principle. Still both very hard but on different terms.

Yes, I will also be going to law school. Poli sci is mainly pre-law, followed by history then english.

True-- if you're an english major you're not learning a trade per se but you certainly ARE learning lifelong techniques that are essential to being successful, such as writing, reading, and communicating your ideas through structured argument. The reason I decided to be an English major was to improve these areas. Besides, if you are a hard worker and can make connections through your speech, rhetoric, or what not, you WILL be successful. Just think about movie writers..authors, sportswriters to name a few.

But really, even if you are an econ major, you know you're not going to apply strict econ to the business world anyway...

The most important thing I have learned is how to make causal connections and flow from point to point in a manner that is easy for the readers to follow your argument...

There is much more to english than reading the *FREQUENT/SEEMINGLY POINTLESS* old english, middle english jibberish...

If you can't communicate your ideas in this society you you are as good as dead!!!

"The pen is mightier than the sword."
