well lately i have been having foamy urine, and my doc said it might be a sign of proteinuria, which is when the body doesnt filter out the protein before it is "pee'd" out, water intake is not an issue i drink atleast 4litres of water a day(1.05gal+)but i also read that proteinuria is sometimes caused by exercise, so im asking if it is normal for a bodybuilder to have proteinuria, and if you have it, and if you are taking sups or not,
currently im taking,
creatine mono
eaa
no
glutamine
and protein
serious answers only please

proteinuria/kidney damage/foamy urine

It is not "normal" for anyone to have proteinuria, though it is certainly more normal in someone doing intensive exercise.
How much protein are you consuming (grams/day avg), are you having any kidney or genital/urinary pain.
Lay off the creatine for a bit, at the very least. My place in here at bb.com is as a fitness enthusiast and recommendations do not represent medical advice. Please consult your examining physician for all medical concerns.

No it's not normal. You should only be taking in 1-1.5 g of protein for every lbs you weigh. Are you doing cardio and if so how much? Did your doctor not explain this to you in detail and what you should do? If not, get a new doctor.

there is nothing wrong with taking in massive amounts of protein assuming you are healthy to start with. If you are concerned have a blood and urine test done to make sure everything is working well. Right now you and the doctor are just guessing, which is not helping either of you.
Over the summer I had blood and urine tests done as a part of my physical, I was eating around 400 grams of protein a day at the time and everything came in normal.

11-29-2007, 05:48 PM #12In summary, dynamic exercise leads to an increased excretion of urinary proteins, the magnitude of which is dependent on the intensity of exercise. Although still not clearly understood, the mechanisms responsible for this transient, reversible phenomenon are likely a combination of a alterations in intrarenal hemodynamics, function of glomerular capillary wall, and the protein reabsorptive capacity of the renal tubule.

Do you eat veggies? When I eat a lot of acidic foods I get the foamies too. It clears up as soon as I start eating salad.

The problem isn't the protein (acidic), it's the lack of vegetables and alkaline fruits.
Your body MUST maintain a pH above 7 or you die. So if your diet isn't balanced, your body will do whatever is necessary to achieve balance. In your case dumping acid ash into your urine rather than processing it.
Exercise adds to the pH problem, and in some cases your body will utilize your skin as a giant kidney in order to maintain a balance - resulting in acne and other skin conditions.

A simple urine test will tell if you do have protein in your urine. Having proteinurea typically indicates kidney damage.
A normally, healthy kidney will not allow protein to get into the urine regarless of the amount consumed.Dr Clay Hyght, DC, CSCS, CISSN

Most fruit yes, but blue berries, plums (prunes), and cranberries are acid forming. Also, all processed fruit juices and high sodium vegetable juices are are acid forming.
Avoid white flour, white rice, coffee, chocolate, processed sugar and most artificial sweeteners (stevia is highly alkaline).
Cook with olive oil and supplement with flax and/or fish oil. Avoid corn oil and of course anything hydrogenated.
Some nuts (peanuts, e.g.) are highly acidic, some (almonds, e.g.) are very alkaline.
Goat's milk is alkaline, while cow's milk is highly acidic and human breast milk highly alkaline.
There is no simple "green is good" rule, even spinach is acidic when cooked but alkaline raw.
