Question about flying and contests/physical performance

I've read on here many times that you should never fly somewhere the day of a contest. Exactly what does it do to your body if you fly the day of a contest? Dehydrate you? Cause water-retention?

Also, what would flying somewhere the day OF a game instead of the day before do to an athletic team? How would it effect their performance negatively? I'm assuming it would be a detriment for a football team to do the same.

it can different affects for different people. some people hold water, some lose... if you're not sure about yourself it's always nice to get there ahead of time so you can get out of a pressurized environment and relax.

if the cabin is properly pressurized (which i'm sure they are) then there should be no problems. The one problem I can see is the fact that the air is recirculated and you will be exposed to many allergins, bacteria, etc, many things that can increase histamine production in your body and histamines can cause big time water retention. If you fly i'd take an anti-histamine before & after.
