Shaving with a Straight Razor
It seems that these days that nearly no one shaves with a straight razor. Why is this? I remember being younger and getting shaves at a local barber shop that were the closest shaves of my life. Is it the high initial investment that costs people to shy away or the fact that they can easily take a chunk out of their neck. I figure the costs would eventually even out after the long run, and although it might take a bit longer i think a lot can be said for a man that can shave with a straight razor. Opinions?

First place i've looked at on the net and i'm sure you could find them cheaper but the DOVO razors seem to be rather high quality from what i have read so far.

Bro, people these days are retarded, and will definately cut themselves.
It's easier to use a straight razor on someone else than it is to use one on yourself, I assume. That might be another reason.

Yes but after the initial investment, you have minimal costs. I use a shick quatro right now and i go through at least one 8pack of blades a month shaving my face and head. Thats about 20$ a month and in a year it actually adds up to more than some of the straight razors on that site. Besides if you're anything like me, i'm always out buying the newest razor looking for a better shave.

compared to the shave you get from a straight razor you may as well not be shaving at all with a "safety razor".

with me i dont go through so many blades, i barely shave that much anyways. i have light blonde colored hair, so no one knows that i even have facial hair.
i also try and avoid shaving too much, cause it can cause your hair to grow back faster and more thicker if you regularly keep shaving.

I like a clean shave not that of an electric razor. My father has some high end razor that gives about as good of a shave as those plastic disposable bics

Yeh people who use a straight razor are far more superior. All hail great straight razor shavers, thou shall bring you silver and wine!
I use an electric razor and it gives a much closer shave than those gillette blades. Also i dont get razor burn from the using eletric, which i did without.
Electric Forever. Manual Never.
Say it with me people....

LOL.
The mach 3's aren't too bad. You have to give em a "double tap" tho...you need to go once with the grain and once against.
Even those little bic BS things do the job for me. Then again, my facial hair is about as coarse as a 13 year old's pubic hair.

i would get one. but i know id eventually cut myself badly. so these straight razors give you an incredibly close shave? it seems complicated, like you'd have to hold the thing at a perfect angle.

it's all about a good shaving cream. I use a regular bic, and it works just fine with good shaving cream.
If I was looking for a good investment, I'd have my face lasered. No more shaving ever.

I actually spoke with my barber on this maybe a month or so ago. He said the bottom line is that the initial investment would be several hundred for just the razor, you also need the equipment to maintain the razor, and the fact that it is really difficult for someone without experience/untrained to maintain the edge would probably be difficult.

Damn, was this when the Andy Griffith Show was new? I don't know of anyone who goes to the barber to get their beard shaved.
I have never used a straight razor, but I heard it's really good. I might have to give it a try sometime.

Straight razors give the best shave, noticeably better than any safety or electric razor, but you have to keep them sharp. I wouldn't use one, because I'm ham fisted. I could just see myself sneezing and opening up my jugular.
