Pushups on gymnastics rings!
Has anyone tried these? A guy I work with has been getting into crossfit training and just bought a set of rings. On Tuesday I went down to the gym in our office building and did a "short" workout with him: we did 10-12 ring pushups followed by 5-6 pullups (on a fixed bar) and repeated that for 6 sets. We each rested while the other was doing their set. We were done in about 20 minutes.
OMG, I woke up at 2:00AM that night feeling like I'd been in a car accident. My upper body has NEVER been so sore ... my front delts are pure agony and I have a ring of fire all the way from my upper pecs around the sides to my lats. My triceps ache. My abs are even sore.
This is just awesome, but in a really bad way.

Never tried pushups but was a gymnast in my early teens. Rings were the hardest disipline due to the necessary upper body strength

This is really cool - I've always loved these kinds of things but I've never done the ring pushups. I grew up near a playground where there were all sorts of bars at different heights and I spent a lot of my childhood doing dips and chins and swinging things - probably should've be a gymnast!
Were you actually able to manage doing them? I suppose these go farther in the stabilizer department than anything else.

Yeah, I think I hung in there pretty well. The pullups were no problem as I usually do 3x10 as part of my back workout. With the pushups, on the last couple of sets I died at around rep 7 or 8, so I took a short breather and then finished each set.
Keeping the arms straight and steady is challenging. The straps can be hung at different widths to create more inward or outward tension. Considering all the strange places I'm feeling sore right now, I'm guessing I hit a lot of unused/underused muscles. I can't wait to try dips!
This page shows some of the different pushup variations (I did #10 and #6 (also elevated)) -- http://www.ringtraining.com/pages/ar...100pushups.htm.
I'm going to try making some poor-man's rings so I can do these at home -- http://board.crossfit.com/showthread.php?t=12572

Ah, so the push up is with your feet on the ground? I thought you were fully suspended, like a dip. I guess it would kinda of hard to do that tho, come to think of it.

Those links help, from your original post I couldn't figure out exactly what the exercise was. Looks like a helluva workout can be had with those. I was just watching gymnastics with my kid last night and he said "Dad, that guy has bigger muscles than you." Must be them fellas are on to something with those rings.

Thanks for the link - a real education for me. But I was thinking of a sort of shoulder pushup with the legs held steady above you. Did you try those?

If you really want a challenge learn to do handstand pushups against a wall. After you do that then move the handstand pushup to the rings.
Let me know how it goes.

This is what I've used for pushups.

If you make your own, you can make them out of a couple of dowels and a nylon cord. Cut the nylon to whatever length you want, and all you'll need is a doorknob to wrap the cord around.

I just use a couple of tie down straps. You know, the kind that you would use to hold a canoe on the top of a car.
I bring them to the gym now and hang them there and then hang the gyms handles handles from a cable machine on the hooks. I works great and it was only twenty bucks. At home, I just hang them over the rail for the garage door. No handles, just hanging on to the strap. It's great.
I really love doing flies with them on chest day along with the pushups. I have my feet on a exercise ball so my feet are elevated and I'm unstablized. I end up working everything this way. It's Intense!! lol

I work out at home and was also trying to figure out how to use these things because I don't own a cage. I don't see how the doorknob idea would work without risking damaging the doorknob and not sure about the proper angle being available.
I like the idea about using one of the braces for my garage door. That might work.
The thing is that I already have ONE of these type of handles with my Weider home gym, and I suppose I can just buy another handle for $15 and some nylon rope, huh?

I was a gymnast in high school . . . rings are fantastic training. Wish I still had the same strength-per-pound and muscle development that I had back then!
Dips on the rings are also tons harder than on a dip station at the gym.
The other great exercise you can do (if you have a place with the height to do it and a partner) is "cross pulls." You've seen gymansts to the Iron Cross on tv . . . all you do is the same thing, but have your partner spot you by supporting your feet. Lower yourself down into a cross and back up a few times. You'll have sore muscles that you never knew you even had before. Again--requires setting the rings a little higher and having a partner.

Or use bands or tubing if workout partner isn't present.

I've seen people do pushups with each hand on the large exercise balls.
Do you think that would give a similar affect?

i have had a similar experience with perfect pushups, which i still think is the best gadget ever invented. i am sure the rings take to an even greater level. i am going to have to figure out how to rig something up.

Yes that is very challenging. I think it would be very similar.
