Difference between precontest workout and off season?

Hi all

Since I'm going to start another cut shortly I'm wondering how I should adapt my training around this.
I've noticed that this "precontest" training differs significantly from offseason training mostly from what I gather in a lighter weight and a higher volume.

Now, is this due to diminishing strength when dieting or what is the reason behind this? Is a high volume beneficial when trying to maintain mass during a cut ?

thx

Maybe I need to elaborate about my current schedule. During my bulk I've cut down on volume a bit, a little less reps mostly between 6-8 or so and going as heavy as I can keeping good form.

So in short, would I benefit if I threw in more sets and kept reps in the 10-12 area more with a tad less weight ?

There is no need to deliberately cut your weights down and boost up your reps. This is an old school approach to getting ready for contests. Conventional thought is that we know higher reps don't = ripped to shreds body. Diet and cardio do. So keep your weight training as is.

Now as you drop bodyfat, thusly overall bodyweight, you may notice dips in your strength...this is a situation where you may drop your resistance so it is still "heavy" relative to your new weight. The only other reason to drop weights during precontest is if you are dealing with minor or nagging injuries, overuse, etc and want to proceed with caution as to avoid a full blown contest ending injury.

A cut is the same principle, just without any carb, water, and electrolyte manipulation for stage presentation. Remember, the key is in cardio and diet. Adjust your macros, particularly making a drop in your carbs and add some cardio. Over time, additional manipulation of macros is necessary. Slow and steady wins the race...

These are just general guidelines, and more specific feedback can be obtained by asking more specific questions, or check out the contest prep, nutrition, or fat loss sections.

Thanks,
I've successfully lost plenty of bodyfat but I wasn't exactly sure on the general opinion about training styles during bulk or cut. I couldn't find a rational explanation for changes but I'd might as well ask for some second opinions.
