How much of your bodyweight are you "benching" when you are doing push ups?

And can doing pushups help out your strength on the bench?

If you can bench your own bodyweight, how many pushups would you be able to do?

    I weigh a little over 200. I bench about 220. I can do 45-60 push-ups in a minute on a decent day. 45 being decent, 60 being good.

-do explosive pushups 3x8 for a bench increase.

basic pushups will not be able to increase your bench. there is a big difference between endurance and strength. depending on the amount of time that is being worked will differentiate the use of your energy systems.

pushups can last anywhere between 30 seconds to 2 minutes. so i dont think it would really count as strength.

now if you use different variations of pushups that is a different story

this was a good idea and i was curious, so i thought i'd try it. i put 1 hand on the scale and kept the other one on the floor. this should give me about half the weight pressed during a pushup.

the initial push up from the ground was the heaviest weight at 120 lbs. total, and the top of the push up was the lightest, at 100 lbs. total. so i guess you're not just using 1 weight the entire time, it's a range of percentages of your body weight.

i'm 165, so here are the percentages:

    100 lbs. = 62.5% body weight
    120 lbs. = 75% body weight

i'm sure the percentages are slightly different depending on your form, but it's probably roughly the same for everyone.

raise your feet up for a more intense load.

Or, stick some plates between your shoulder blades. I do this when i don't have a spot and fancy a quick workout, granted, it's not as good as real benching, to me it's like leg press and squats, a supplement to the major exercise.

LOL I've done this a while ago just out of curiousity and I got 66kg (I weigh 90)

...and I can bench a little over my bw(100kg-220lbs) and can do 65 pushups in a row....but that has nothing to do with it.
