    Any downside to paying rent under the table?

    My landlord is offering me a lower monthly rent if I give it to him under the table (so he doesn't get taxed on the income) - Are there any downsides I should be wary of?

    I would do it if I was cool with the landlord. The only problem I see is that there is no lease so he could kick you out at any time. I see no legal troubles for you though.

    Yeah exactly - It's not my problem if he's not declaring the income.

    But you're right, I might forgo some of protection tenants are normally protected by..but at the same time, he knows that if he screws me over, I could report him for tax evasion.

    for 2 years i paid my rent in cash (i dont live there anymore.) never really had any problems realted to it. my landlord was a complete piece of white trash, and i'd never live in an apartment like that again, but, whatever. i never had any problems because i paid in cash.

    how much of a discount is gonna give you?

    He's never been my landlord before but a friend of a friend lived in that same condo before and never had any problems with him. It's a new condo with brand new appliances so I can't see much potential for anything going wrong.

    ...And since I won't have signed a lease agreement, I can decide to move whenever I want.

    like mentioned above , given that you are paying him under the table and you are aware of it, you have no rights as a renter, but you just have to sit down and figure out the benefit cost of you paying rent under the table vs.. having renter rights.

    so sit down make a pro/con list and figure out which one is greater, as long as everything works and your apartment is not contaminated with dangerous mold you should be ok.

    i dont know about other countries. but england

    if you do cash to save a bit of money bear in mind
    that you have no legal leg to stand on if something goes wrong
    for example you pay a plumber to do some work he says i can knock 200 quid off
    for cash in hand (no receipt). you say sweet he does the work, you hand over
    the money jobs a good'n. while your in bed the ceiling collapses cuz the plumber
    unknown to you is a ****wit and forgot to solder a joint.
    your house is wrecked you go to court expecting a payout. they say wheres your invoice "you say ahh it was a cash job" theyll say ****off. then send customs and excise around your house asking why you and your plumber were knowingly avoiding vat... your ****ed
