High Blood Pressure

My uncle is pretty overweight and has high blood pressure that recently caused him a trip to the hospital. Obviously, he needs to lose the weight. Other than that, does anyone with experience know of anything dietary that can lower blood pressure and help keep it down?

Healthy fats.

Omega 3's in particular have been show to reduce a lot of risk for serious cardiovascular problems.

Some of it is probably genetic, and some is related to his weight but a bunch of fish oil can do nothing but help.

Like you said, losing weight is the most important thing he can do. Try to get him walking at least 1/2 hour a day.

Low carb diets are the best for losing weight quickly. Cut out grains, pasta, sugar and all processed foods.

As far as supplement, along with an iron free multi, he can take garlic and magnesium to help with the blood pressure.

Sodium . . .

High sodium intake is associated w/ hypertension. I'd make sure it was 2400 mg/day or less.

^ what they said

also, high blood pressure can be caused by potassium and sodium imbalances. Increase potassium intake and that should help. Reducing sodium intake can help too, but it isn't always an issue as long as there is enough potassium.

Beat me to it

try to have less canned foods
and avoid adding salt to any recipe if you dont need it
also avoid frozen TV dinners or anything of that nature
