    CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid)????????

I heard this works pretty well with burning fat and improving muscle tone. Are there any immediate or later side effects with this product. Does it stunt growth? What stores can I find this at?

Not worth it. A sound diet combined w/ a solid strength training and cardio routine will do 10x more.

Studies have confirmed that CLA works for improving body composition. Unfortunately, experiences by most people don't back up the studies' claims.

That's probably because most people don't use CLA standardized to the same percentage of isomers that the studies use...

A study published this year used a 50/50 Cis-9, Trans-11/Trans-10, Cis-12 isomer split. IIRC, around 3.5g per day. NOW CLA has the same isomer profile.

apparently when people take CLA and report nothing its because of the too low dosages....maybe a higher dosage will work

Do you happen to remember off the top of your head what the toxicity level of cla is? Isnt it very very close to the supposed "effective" dose?

What is strange about all the studies is that the weight/fat loss was quite extreme. Sometimes 5%-9% BF reductions.
The only thing I can conclude is that the CLA is really making up for some type of serious nutrition deficit in the study subjects that does not exist in the healthier, athletically trained set around here. Most (all) of the studies are conducted using obese and morbidly obese subjects. Perhaps if we had 50%-60% BF to start with we would see the dramatic results of the studies.

cla is meant to prevent more new fat cells from forming; that's why its better to use it when you're bulking not cutting.

Out of curiosity, were you cutting or bulking when you unsuccessfully tried CLA? I assumed you used the NOW Brand. What were your dosages?

I guess I'm one of the stupid people that hasn't completely given up on CLA. I've used NOW CLA in the past at 6g (4.8g CLA) per day. Currently I'm taking BN bulk CLA, 10g (7g CLA) per day. I used to be extremely overweight with very high BF so I look at anything I can do to keep from gaining fat as a good thing. If the CLA helps any at all it's all good to me. Besides, CLA has shown some other benefits outside of weight/fat loss.

My advice to all CLA users is to start megadosing leucine pre, during, and post workout.

If you don't see noticable results, I'll buy your (unopened) bulk leucine from you.

What do you consider a megadose of leucine?
I was taking EAA's before, during, and after workout. That amounted to about 8g-10g of leucine.

im going to try CLA myself.. im not expecting any jaw dropping results.. but im massively bulking as of now and i hope it helps me keep off the fat..

however, im split between the two..

    Ultimate Nutrition CLA
    &
    NOW CLA

Ultimate Nutrition CLA has "Patented CLAPure".. i wonder if it'd be better..

CLA is not a wonder supplement but does serve a purpose. Combined with a healthy diet this can help with a leaner body composition. To say it doesn't work is rather ingnorant considering you are basing claims from "forum rumors" or out of your own failed experience. Here some studies which show the effectiveness of CLA on altering body composition. Until you gain a PhD or even an undergraduate degree for that matter I suggest you keep your baseless opinions to yourself. There is a ton of research which gives positive support towards CLA.

    That is a good post.

    ^^^^^^ Agreed.

I took this stuff many years ago. Of course I bought the "marked down" GNC branded CLA (which might have made my CLA experience even worse actually).

Compared to the EFAS I was taking it actually made me feel kind of sick. In all fairness that cheap GNC stuff might have been partly to blame.

I've been using 3-5 grams per day of CLA from Twinlab over the past 2 or 3 mos. in combo w/ a couple of other things. Namely, ECA or yohimbine. I've taken off approx. 5 bodyfat percentage points.
Not sure exactly what did it, but something's working. I think CLA is solid, but takes time. Everything I've heard about it's effectiveness is dependent upon at least 3 mos of continuous use.
I end up getting it pretty cheap, so I plan to continue to use it during this last month of slow cutting and also into my upcoming bulking phase. I figure if it's slowly, but steadily reducing BF, I'll stick w/ it...certainly can't hurt.

    J Nutr. 2005 Apr;135(4):778-84.

Supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid for 24 months is well tolerated by and reduces body fat mass in healthy, overweight humans.

After 12 mo in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) supplementation (2 groups received CLA as part of a triglyceride or as the free fatty acid, and 1 group received olive oil as placebo), 134 of the 157 participants who concluded the study were included in an open study for another 12 mo. The goals of the extension study were to evaluate the safety [with clinical chemistry analyses and reported adverse events (AEs)] and assess the effects of CLA on body composition [body fat mass (BFM), lean body mass (LBM), bone mineral mass (BMM)], body weight, and BMI. All subjects were supplemented with 3.4g CLA/d in the triglyceride form. Circulating lipoprotein(a) and thrombocytes increased in all groups. There was no change in fasting blood glucose. Aspartate amino transferase, but not alanine amino transferase, increased significantly. Plasma total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol were reduced, whereas HDL cholesterol and triglycerides were unchanged. The AE rate decreased compared with the first 12 mo of the study. Body weight and BFM were reduced in the subjects administered the placebo during the initial 12 mo study (-1.6 +/- 3.2 and -1.7 +/- 2.8 kg, respectively). No fat or body weight changes occurred in the 2 groups given CLA during the initial 12 mo. LBM and BMM were not affected in any of the groups. Changes in body composition were not related to diet and/or training. In conclusion, this study shows that CLA supplementation for 24 mo in healthy, overweight adults was well tolerated. It confirms also that CLA decreases BFM in overweight humans, and may help maintain initial reductions in BFM and weight in the long term.
