Are biceps important for Muay Thai, or are they just show muscles?

I know the biceps is quite the glory muscle in the world of bodybuilding, but in kickboxing combat sports like Muay Thai, I heard they are quite irrelevant...

My lifting friend rarely works his biceps, he usually goes to the gym mostly for shoulders, chest and legs, abs... Mind you, his biceps are still pretty big (maybe from back work) but he never actually focuses on them because he says big biceps tend to slow you down in an actual fight.

Well, I've been training biceps, but like him I mostly train in general to compliment kickboxing (which I'll start eventually..) so I was wondering if I should stop training them, or at least stop trying to gain biceps mass and just hit them whenever I do back exercises.

I find that without them it's very hard to bend your arms.

For real though, having strong or big biceps definitely isn't as important as having good lats or delts, but they won't hurt you or slow you down.

They may actually help a little bit in the clinch too, I'd think.

Increasing the strength of antagonist muscles like lats and biceps can increase the speed and power of your punch.

they also get worked a lot in clinching. big biceps dont slow you down, being slow slows you down. this doesnt mean muay thai requires direct bicep work

I know you asked specifically for Muay thai, but if you ever get into MMA/bjj then having bodybuilder size biceps is not a great thing. I fought a bodybuilder a few years ago, i armbarred him, and i guess his arm was so huge that it didn't bend as far as most. he ended up tearing his Bicep, and i didnt even think it was on that tight..

obviously that dude was an extreme.. i wouldnt stop training them, unless you look like this guy.

biceps certainly aren't the most important muscles, but they are definitely not useless in fighting. especially on the ground. strong biceps are very good for defense against submssions (ie Kimura, keylock, etc). i would assumer biceps contribute to punching power as well especially uppercuts. the thing is most great fighters have huge biceps. i dont know if its a genetic thing or its because they work so hard on everything that they just seem to have them.

the only way it'd slow you down is if the biceps were tensed up or just tight to the point of not allowing the arm extend fully.

If you want to throw powerful hooks it would help having strong biceps. Additionally having proper form will aid in throwing harder faster punches. So, work on form and biceps. It would not hurt.

Biceps arent that useful in fighting to be honest.

Your back, shoulders and chest would be more useful

Alright thank you guys, and WOW I never noticed Silva had arms that small (though I think that's also a not so good pic).

Did some more reading and I suppose they do stabilize arm angle for hooks and upper-cuts, but not much else.

So I think I will continue training them (cause mine aren't exactly hyoooge), but I won't actually do exercises that isolate them. I.e. I'll only hit them when I do compound exercises with the back that just happens to use biceps too.

Back to catching up to my friend then...and thanks for the input(s).

Arms arent most Important in Mma. You mainly solid delts, lats and quads. But every muscle serves a purpose and I would think some strong bi's could come in handy during a grapple or something like that.

After long sessions of hitting the bag, especially with emphasis on hooks, my bis get sore just as much as a regular session of heavy curls. I don't believe in neglecting any body areas....what is there to lose in being stronger? Your body works together as a unit.

Your biceps won't get clunky and slow down your punches. That's all bull****. If you suck at fighting, it's because you suck at fighting.. it's not because you're jacked.

If you train your muscles properly, they will do what you've trained them to do. If you've done a ****ty job of training then you've done a ****ty job at training, but hopefully you have a nice set of guns to flash. Why not work your biceps in accordance with YOUR response to strength training and continue practicing Muay Thai?

I seriously think anyone who blames their fighting abilities or discipline skills on their muscles are just idiots looking for a scapegoat. Don't spend all your time curling when you can't budge a punching bag with your crappy punches.

BTW, biceps aren't much of a glory muscle for most serious bodybuilders. That sort of allure is reserved for newbs or wankers in general. Lots of bb'ers like biceps for sure, but there are just as many that admire and enjoy training chest, triceps, back, legs, etc.
