Deadlifts
I know deadlifts are one of the best lifts for overall strength, but what do you guys think about its merit as far as size? I wonder if it is that important for mass.

science: let's look at this, as your screen name sake: scientifically: exercises that work the largest muscle groups of your body, stimulate your circulatory system the most.
meaning: a set of deadlifts or squats does more for your circulation than a set of conentration curls.
as such , there is nothing intrinsically magical about any one particular movement, but rather a CLASS of movements and their overall effect on the body.
Building up BOTH the circulatory system and the nervous system are just as critical towards muscle growth as any other factor.
And movements that work the large muscles, such as the Quads, will have that beneficient effect on your circulatory system.
so: INDIRECTLY: they can assist "mass" in other parts of your body, other than the muscle actually targeted by them ( in this case, the quads).
this does NOT mean: that you have to overdo the poundages and risk a serious back injury that could set back all of your training.

I don't think you will get the back mass you desire without it. Great strength and mass builder!

As ALWAYS, I agree with everything JG says. For the OP, you can do sets of 6 reps and that works just fine rather than trying 3s or singles.

Deadlifts are awesome. My overall strength has skyrocketed since I started doing farmer's deadlifts. Even my bench increased quickly from 225 to 290 in a few weeks, go figure. Next challenge is a 300+ bench, and I feel it will happen soon.
Edit.. but of course, you are asking about mass, not strength. Even so... they are great.

honestly I do not care what they do for overall mass-building. I started doing deads not too long ago and I love them, there is something about deads, make me feel strong and good. I like seeing loaded bar and not believing that was ME moving that weight. Its kind of moral booster thing.

Deads work almost every muscle in the body, even more than squats. Activating all that muscle at once does wonders for your T and hGH levels, which are key for both strength AND size increases.

If you were told that you can only do two exercises from now and on, and you can NOT do no other, the two that would benefit your whole entire body would be Squats and Deadlifts (remember I said Deadlifts NOT SLDL get it right people they are two totally different movements!!)

This reminds me. I have to get back to deads. They are definitely a great strength and mass builder. All the heavy compund lifts are. I wish Planet Fitness had a good spot to do them.
