Propecia and Body Building

I asked my Doctor for a perscription of Propecia and I wanted to know if anyone in here is taking it and how it effects muscle gains. I understand it removes testosterone from your system, which seems like it would effect muscle gains. I am 31 and my hair is thinning a bit and I wanted to take some preventive steps to keep what I have. Also enjoy body building and worry about my gains.

Does anyone have experience with traking Propecia while working out?

My understanding is that MPB (male patern baldness) is caused when testosterone is converted to DHT (a mutated form of testosterone). Perhaps propecia blocks this conversion??? Anyone???

Yeah, you'll be fine. I've never noticed anything negative. I've been taking name brand for a little over 2 years now. Some people have libido issues, ...not me, thank God.

I just wanted to throw in my two cents too. After my first M1T cycle, I lost some hair for the first time in my life. It's been a year now and I've been taking finasteride (the generic of Propecia) for about nine months. Although all my hair didn't grow back, a noticeable amount of it did, and I never notice hairs coming out in the shower (when I shampoo/condition) or on my pillow case. It hasn't affected my training gains either. Only positive things to say about it. The sooner you get it, the better.
- Get about 1.5 g of protein/lb of lean body weight/day
- Take at least 40-50 g of whey protein immediately post-workout
- Take 5 g of creatine monohydrate pre/post-workout
- Take a daily multivitamin
- Get at least 8 hours of quality sleep
- Take 2 or 3 days/week off. Rest allows growth.

It doesn't seem to hurt gains at all. It will actually raise testosterone 10% due reduced conversion to DHT. Technically I guess you could always convert to estrogen though.

I can't remember if the 10% higher testosterone ever came back down over time.

ibenutrition sells 5g/ml 30ml bottles for $30 I think. If a dose is 1.25g then its 120 doses for $30.

I avoided it after reading some negative feedback on proscar though and went with dr lee's xandrox 15%, spironolactone 5%, minoxidil and regrowth shampoo stack. Very pleased with the reluts, after trying everything under the sun hair loss has stopped and is even growing back even while on cycle.

Good stuff

I've been pondering whether to get on it or not (thinning a bit, runs in the family, thank god I happen to look good even with it buzzed short, so I'm not too worried). I'm terrified about the libido and gyno issues that it causes in some though. Hmmm

From a bodybuilding standpoint finasteride really shouldn't affect your gains all that much if at all. A drop in libido seems to be the main side effect associated with finasteride use. 1 mg is the standard dose, but some people may get away with using only .5 mg per day. From what I've read finasteride seems to be effective at halting further hair loss, but it is fairly poor at restoring lost hair (of course this depends on how quickly you address the issue). For hair regrowth you might be better off with topical spiro (5%), minoxidil, and nizoral (2%, although I've heard 1% may work just as well).

The comment about it's going to happen no matter what you do is a bit exaggerated. Heavily lowering DHT in the scalp should prevent further hair loss due to androgenic alopecia. If you look at Spiro, it's anti-androgenic properties are so powerful that it has been known to regrow hair in even difficult places such as the front of the scalp. Furthermore, the severity of the gene in different people varies. This is easily seen by those who start balding in their 30's or later, compared to some people who don't even make it to 20 without balding. Clearly the process takes much longer in some people, and it would seem as if proper treatment in this group would be fairly likely to halt hair loss.

I agree with Danik IMO the way to treat hairloss is with topical anti dhts not propecia. This way you can keep your dht for the rest of the body.

I know DHT is supposedly anti-estrogenic and some say it increases "drive", but honestly once secondary sexual characteristics have been formed through young adulthood what's the point?

When you hear about bodybuilders doing cycles to get ready for contests they always include a heavy androgenic drug to "harden up," These "hardening up" drugs are almost always dht derivitives. IMO it has a lot to do with bodybuilding. Although I have never used steroids or propecia, so I cannot tell from first hand experience.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with this post. Once you become a grown adult, DHT seems to have less of a role in the body. If you aren't experiencing any of the sex drive issues or estrogen mediated symptoms, I don't think finasteride is a bad decision. It may also play a role in strength and CNS recovery, but most finasteride users on this board don't appear to have a problem in this regard. The only thing I wouldn't really trust it for is any considerable hair regrowth because studies have shown that very few experience regrowth from using finasteride alone.

I also think that finasteride has its place in test cycles for those extremely worried about hair loss because there will still be ample DHT due to increased test levels, and estrogen problems can always be countered by using an AI.

u can only slow down process..... i don't care what u do it's going to happen one day.......... maybe tomorrow...maybe be 20 years but it will happen......... also dht has the ability to change your sex drive if u lower it too much........ dht is an important hormone at any age...... that is why your body regulates it....... just as estrogen is important as well...........

Hair regrowth by using anti-androgenic medications such as spiro suggests you are wrong. The only logical understanding for why spiro is capable of doing this is that without the presence of androgens at the receptor, the hair follicle is able to repair itself to its previous size. Wouldn't you agree that this is even more than just slowing down the process?

Minoxidil works by keeping the hair follicle in the anagen phase by some unknown mechanism. If the hair follicle is kept in the anagen phase, please tell me how it is going to fall out. The only problem with many of these meds is that the body becomes desensitized to them over time, and their effects are not as potent. This however should be more of an issue with systemic meds like finasteride, as opposed to topical.

Cutting your nuts off would permanently cure MPB. Spit in the eye of those genetics and hack those boys off. <a

(1) proceia does not remove testosterone from the body. If it did, you would be in trouble. It reduced DHT
(2) it's unkown what if any effects it has on muscle mass. There are reasons to think it may actually help(slight increase in T) and reasons to think it will hurt gains, due to decrease in DHT
