To isolate my chest after my primary exercises I used to use the Hammer strength incline, but the fixed ROM doesn't bode well with me (I'm tall, lanky and I think the machine was designed for short or medium guys) I'm thinking of using the smith since that also takes out the stabilizers. Thoughts?

Is the smith machine good for isolating the chest?

i PREFER free weight but i think the smith still works very well. Your pecs are pushing the weight up, its not magically going up by itself. Sure it may be easier but you also should be moving more weight in there. It's just ignorant to say its useless.

Give it a try and see what you think. That's only real way to tell how well it will work. I follow a few journals of guys that use the Smith for incline presses. Seems to work out well for them.
He said AFTER his primary exercises. I'm assuming those are barbell/dumbbell lifts....
This place is funny.

x4. I owe the bulk of my chest development to heavy Smith inclines.
If you want to take them out, you'd probably want to do more of a fly such as atrainer flies.
And FYI, just so you know: tris and delts are synergists/secondaries on the bench; the stabilizers are the back and biceps. People often confuse the two terms.
See above. I just learned this move two weeks ago and IT BURNS!Keep on hulkin'.
I won't quit till no shirt will fit.

FWIW, on days I do not have a spotter, I will use the smith for bench. I notice that I lift much less with the smith because i can not recruit as many muscles as I could with teh free weight's J curve. In that respect, it may isolate well for you, but dont expect it to help you lift more becaue you dont need stabalizer muscles. IMO its more hindrance than help.
