Bally Total ****ness or is it all in my head??
Due to monetary constraints, I'm "forced" to have a membership with Bally Total ****ness instead of my love "Bev Francis Gold's Gym" in Syosset NY. Bev's is hardcore awesome, gets my adrenaline pumping, but charges $450 a year.
Some of you are probably saying that's nothing, it's worth the investment, etc., but with 3 kids, a house....it's a lot of money for me.
So I have a membership at Bally's, motivation isn't the greatest. I bring my IPOD so I can listen to hardcore metal, rock, techno, etc. instead of Take it in the Backstreet Boys, Britney Whores, Jessica Suckacock and other such ***s. Listening to that crap weakens me to want to lift a rubber duck to my butthole.
Is it all in my head? Do you guys/girls experience more motivation at certain gyms than others?

$450 a year is $1.30 a day. Don't buy a coffee at starbucks every day and you are ahead of the game.
If you had to spend that much on one of your kids health you would find a way. Sometimes you have to be a bit selfish. IMHO

1- For someone who brings his iPod with him you're awfully concerned with the music they play at the Gym.
2- You didn't list any issues with the equipment at Bally so I'm assuming that the equipment is fine.
3- Your bastardization of the entertainers' and Bally's name was quite short of funny/brilliant/interesting.
4- You may find it more helpful to pay attention to your workouts and ignore that which doesn't matter.
5- Sounds like you're attracted to the branding of the Gold's and the pack mentality. You come across like a spoiled gym brat in your OP.

Needless vulgarity aside, I say go the gym that meets the greatest number of your needs (price, convenience, equipment, etc.). It is just a matter of figuring out what will keep you motivated. If you hate Bally's so badly that you won't go, then you have wasted the entire amount of your gym dues and spending the extra money to go a gym that will keep you working out may be worth the extra investment.

Wow that's a nice attack against someone you don't know. Okay then, in my defense...
1. I can't workout to "soft" music, I need something hardcore to train to and for motivation. I can't train to WPLJ music. I only listen to that type when I leave the gym for relaxation.
2. The equipment is fine. What isn't is the lack of any staff members to tell the gym guests to return equipment/dumbbells where they belong, hence dumbbells ALL OVER the floor, 1 55 lb dumbbell here, the other across the other side. Also is the conversing on the cell with one hand while curling with the other, or the leg presses while reading a book....I can go on
3. I make most people chuckle, but hey, ya can't make everyone happy now can you?
4. It's a bit difficult to pay as much attention as I would like when there are a bunch of kids who don't know how to lift hoot and holler about all sorts of non-sensical garbage.
5. I'm attracted to any hardcore gym where it's members and owners take lifting seriously, whether that be a GOOD Gold's, Powerhouse, heck even a good Bally's if I can fine one!
Anything else you want to add pal?

Now you I can agree with. Yes I probably have wasted my money at Bally's. I need to put money aside throughout the year to be where I really want to be.
*** Anyone else reading this thread, take it lightly, as it is meant lightly. What I meant to get out of this was "do certain gyms motivate you more than others"
As for my vulgar attack on the pop stars, what can I say, I can't stand pop.

As I mentioned in my last post, you're right, I need to shift my monies towards saving up for the year at a good gym since this one isn't doing anything for me.
By the way Starbucks is overrated.

I agree and their coffee gives me heartburn but you missed the point. It doesn't have to be coffee you cut back on, it can be anything. There are always things you can scrimp on to save a couple of extra bucks. I could take you grocery shopping and save you $1000 bucks a year no sweat. Kids, wives and houses are all good excuses but they are excuses none the less, almost everyone lives above their means somewhere in their lifestyle.

Bhaputi: you always come up with these gems! you are a hoot.....
I do hope though, that the OP comes back on here and answers my question, as I am curious as to why he listed such an absurd weight, after looking at the excellent pictures in his avatar.
Bev Francis, by the way, who is a sweetheart of a person, runs a Natural Event associated with her LI gym every year.
I believe that our OP has competed in this event, as he looks terrific.

Bev Francis took a caliper test on me back in 2004, says my LBM (at 5% BF) is @ 245lbs. Hard to believe for an all natural guy, but I want to put this to the test. Trying to get my motivation back, shake off this fat laziness and start getting hardcore again!! I miss that feeling!

God, I hope I don't get the visual on this....
Anyway, just a suggestion, but maybe just bite the bullet for a year and save up the cash like how lukamar stated to go back to the gym you prefer. Even so, i can't believe that someone who's been in a competition rely's so much on 1 particular gym for ALL his motivation. You obviously have that in abundance and probably being pissed off with the gym you'll have to go to will only motivate you more.

Bally's is better than Planet Fitness.

Thanks I just like to get all the facts straight.
Reading between the lines, I think the OP was a competitor in the late 80s/early 90s (kudos to him, as I will never have the discipline to do it myself) that was at least somewhat successful. He probably added some bodyfat and got to the 300 number listed, now wanting to drop the fat.
I say good luck on the goals, OP!

I dont know the bally in your area but, the bally that i go for 10 years it's AWOSOME! and getting better each time.., and the most important, i only pay $20.00 a months..! :]]. I know friends who goes to "Washington sport club" and payd $90-1$00 dollar/month and the gym is so small, lack of free weights and machines. Perhaps that bally where you go is not the right one for you! just work out where you feel confortable.

Agreed. $450 is dirt cheap for a gym in Manhattan where the majority of memberships are upwards of $1000 annually.

Nope. I've gotten as good a workout at my regular no-frills warehouse-garage gym as I have at the Y or at my company fitness center. It's what you make of it, as long as the equipment is there, of course.

I live in Albuquerque NM and the cheapest gym in town is exactly what the OP says is too expensive. I find this strange.
$38 a month is cheaper than what I remember paying at Bally's when I lived in Denver 12 years ago.

Well, do you know Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson personally? The names you called them seems like quite an attack on two people you don't know. Just saying...........
Plus, that final commentary about a rubber duck is juvenile. How old are you?
I went to a Bally's in St. Louis for a week and they were nice enough to give me the entire week free as I was visiting from out of state. It was fine for me. I did my lifting thing and exited the building.
If you hate it that much, figure out a way to go elsewhere.

Ooooookkaayyyyy.....lol.....you guys got me. This post I put in was a slight rant, yes a bit immature....more along the lines of frustration at this point.
Anyway, the 300 is correct, and I have my old picture up there for inspiration to get back to my old shape, as I do have a couple more on my dresser.

On 11-30-2005 you said this......
"My biggest problem right now is time. With a full time job, husband and two kids (one I drive 1 1/2 hours every other weekend to be with him), it's a lot harder than when I was in college."
Sounds like the same song 2 years later. Sorry but if you have not made an attempt at positive changes in your life in years it's hard to get my sympathy vote.
At least come up with new excuses. Damn man the problem is not Ballys or Brittany - IT'S YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have a long time negative attitude. You can whine all you want but only YOU can make changes in your life.
