I might join one of the gyms in my area and I was wondering how much money should i expect to pay monthly? Also, are there any qualities that i should look for to deturmine which gym is the best?

Hey I live in canada.
And personally I think I have the best deal for a membership, hehe... I work @ a gym and I get mine free. But anyways I'd say with my experiences the most important things about going to a gym are:
-How much free weight is there (How low and high do the weights go)
-Are there any additional fee's, as in is the weights, cardio and Fitness Classes seperate or is it all included. Any start up fee's because thats where they can get you, you see a sign for $30 a month when they really mean the start up fee is $50 and theres a tax per month so your spending alot more then you bargained for!
-Make sure they have a good set of machines/cables, whats the point of going to a gym if the equipment isn't that good.
-What kind of security do they offer, such as how safe are the locker rooms? Do they offer locks or do you bring your own, because I've had a couple people loose very expensive things of theirs because they didn't lock their lockers!
I hope this helps alot, anymore questions feel free to ask I've heard em all!-If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.
-Life is like a sewer... what you get out of it depends on what you put into it.
-It matters not what you do, as long as you are the best one doing it.
-Many complain of their looks, but none of their brains.
-Practice makes perfect, but nobody's perfect, so why practice?
-Patience will come to those who wait for it.

look at the gym first... see the equipement... does it look like a place you can lift at( i mean get intense and noone caring- well **** what they think anyways), is the enviorment what you want, whats the price, do the offer other things at the gym that could drive up cost, how are the people there( employees).. etc... just think about these things...

im lucky at my gym...the guys are really nice there...and they workout with intensity too (most of them) so we all make sure we get everything done. If your not dealifting with perfect form, one of the older more experianced lifters will make sure he corrects you, if your not squatting at least parallel, they will tell you and make sure you go to at least parallel. Its a great environment and fun too. THey hold an annual competition each year which is fun..
mostly the guys who help with your form and lifts are.. this guy named ...
Gary - Not a big guy, but knows what he is doing, 190 lbs, 560lb deadlift, 380 bench, 480 squat.
Tim - Hilarious Guy - 148 lbs, 450 deadlift, 300 bench, not sure bout squat..
Pastor- Was on olympic powerlifting team in 70's, so it good with powerlifting especially for clean and jerk and stuff.
Gary and Tim are both personal trainers, and good people.... so i think its great its free..http://www.fortified-iron.com/

I'm down from college and the only gym i can get into for free is Balleys. I hate that friggin place. I can't get a good workout there. Maybe it's just mine, becasue i'm in S. Florda, but there is nothing but old people and homos in there. And all the music is friggin boy bands. It's terrible. The dumbells only go up to 85's. What the hell am i supposed to do for dumbell rows and DB chest exercises.

$
My mom signed me up when i was 15, so back then they couldent let 15 year olds in the gym, but they still wanted $$, so my rate was 10 bucks a month, 3 years later my bill is still only $120 a year! i go to LA fitness, good place, its not a BB gym, some big guys, but lots of starters. my friend became a personal trainer over there and he helps me out on form and excersizes once in a while. then again i dont go there for the ppl, i go for the equipment.

i payed about $350 for a year at my gym, but that enables anyone in my family to go, and since my brother is my workout partner it works out pretty well,, in my opinion, you should choose your gym on what conditions suit you,, i chose my gym because it is usually pretty empty in the morning (when i lift), this lets me focus more on my workout without interruption

joe, im lucky too cause the church is about 2 miles from my house, so if i cant get a ride, i can just run there or something...the only "fee" you can optionally pay, is a 10$ donation for a t-shirt, and a 15$ fee to enter a church held powerlifting contest...
