both are good, DB's give you a bit more ROM. Bottom line is..... whichever works and gives the best results for YOU is the better exercise.

DB Shrugs may be better for bodybuilding because they work them from a more direct angle with greater ROM. Compare and contrast the size of your traps when you do a shrugs with a barbell and with dumbbells. The DB's will have you pulling backwards more, and the barbell will have you shrugging from the top of the traps. Just seems to me DB's work them better, but both can give muscle gains.

My two favorite trap movements: DB shrugs and the hammer strength trap shrug.
Bodybuilding is 60% training and 50% diet. Yes that adds up to 110%, because that's what you should be giving it. Change the inside, and the physique will follow.

I wouldn't say one is better then the other just they basically serve two different purposes. DB shrugs are the more natural arm position and give a greater ROM, but in most gyms, DB's only get so heavy before you're forced to do 30 reps every workout :P Barbells can be utilized for heavier work. I would say use both, if not during the same workout, then at least alternate every few weeks.

hmm, I might mention it next time I go 2 the gym. It is a university gym, but I don't know if they would take any suggestions unless it comes from a member of a university sports team or summin i guess. O well
They would b good 4 shrugs and deads.

If it's a university they could definitely use one for their athletic strength training.

Yeh, we got **** loads of barbells, like 15. ppl do some olympic lifts and that, Im starting to try some as well. Im fairly happy with doing deads with a normal barbell, and doing shrugs on the smith machine, but would be nice to have 1, they look like the bars would be superior doing deads.

It's also less pressure on the spine. I personally have never really done them since I've never had access but guys like Joe Defranco swear by them.

You could get adjustable super long dumbells.

    Jus' sayin.

I use a trap bar. After a few sets of Barbell Shrugs, my low back is to toasted to work my traps to the hilt. Though the deadlifts prior might be the reason... Might go back to them when I try out a split.

    Listen Dolt,

At some point down the road, you will want to use more weight than DB's are going to allow. Stop being a fcuking idiot.

    Jus' sayin.

I use a trap bar. After a few sets of Barbell Shrugs, my low back is to toasted to work my traps to the hilt. Though the deadlifts prior might be the reason... Might go back to them when I try out a split.
who the fcuk it going to go to that trouble to shrug.

    jus sayin'

    and duh

What's with all the aggression/personal attacks?

I would get long adjustable dumbells for greater freedom in training. It's hardly much trouble. Maybe you wouldn't. Doesn't bother me.

Yup. Keep on barbell shrugging all you want. Why WOULD it bother me?

I'll tell you one thing that does bother me though... making personal attacks at proponents of dumbell shrugs because of a very surmountable problem that you wouldn't go to the trouble to fix.

Makes no sense, perhaps because I'm just a dolt like Bolt. Perhaps you could clarify?

what makes you think bar shrugs are so godly? cant you hold heavy dumbells or something? if you think you're strong shrugging 400lbs on a bar try and shrug 200lbs each hand and call it weak
