i've heard (not completely sure if its true) but when in water colder than core body temp (which most swimming water is) the heart slows down dramatically to keep body heat stable, therefore deacreasing efficiency of the cardio session

Current: 145lbs 5'7" 18% BF

i forgot were but i read a whole report on how swimming is a bad form of cardio. It seems wrong, but it explained how even though alot of neerg is used which is what ure aiming at,for some reason u dont loose weight. The study showed the people that swam instead of ran lost much less fat. Might have something to do with what the above person said.

I did competitive swimming for 6+ years, and that's how it works. Getting in the cold water at first sucks, but once you've done your warmup set and get into the main practice, your body temp returns to normal (though if the water is too cold, it makes breathing difficult and drastically shortens how long you can hold your breath). Believe me, I've trained in 65 degree water, and after warmup, as long as you kept moving (in between sets sucks though), you're fine.
Swimming is a great form of cardio, whoever said that it causes you to put on fat is wrong. Go to a swim meet, and look at the really fast guys, they have lower body fat than most any other athletes you'll see. They don't train anything other than swimming, 4-5+ hours a day. I used to be one of those guys, and let me tell you, you can't gain weight without doing outside lifting. Swimmers will eat 3x as much as everyone else, twice as often, and still not be able to pack on weight, just because they are burning so many calories. I used to eat non-stop for entire days, yet stayed at 165-170lbs (I was 6'2").
I may be fairly new to BBing, but swimming is something I know. It keeps you in great shape, keeps body fat down, and keep your cardiovascular and respiratory systems healthy, more so than any other sport in my opinion.
All of that applies on a lesser level to those doing it for purely a cardio workout. The key is to keep moving, don't so short sets and rest, or even long slow sets. Find a medium-fast pace you can hold, and do a 2000yard swim straight of it, then maybe some kicking, or different strokes. Warmup is a key, if you don't, you can easily blow a knee or shoulder (nearly all competitive swimmers have problems in at least one of those areas). One thing to watch out for: doing swimming as your only cardio workout may lower bone density, because you are in a near-zero strain environment for your bones (similar to what astronauts experience in space). It would be wise to mix in running or biking, at least occasionally.
Well that's pretty much exhausted the one topic I can discuss knowledgably on this board, back to lurking

I did both and swimming easily is better overall. You work every muscle, it is less boring, more versatile isolation options like kickboard, hand flippers and so forth. It is also low impact and you will find you will want to eat more after a swim than a jog.
But as mentioned the convenience is less, but if you are serious about cardio just find a nearest pool and make the effort. Swimming tones the whole body, you can get good definition if you mix up all styles of swimming.EoR is powered by unique Nanomolecular Hyperdispersion Technology.
