Davis Islands Gunman Fake, But The Fear Is Real

TAMPA - Two teens in Halloween costumes caused a stir in Davis Islands on Tuesday when someone thought the gun-toting man and his hostage were real, police said.

Police responded to the 600 block of Danube Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. Tuesday with more than a dozen officers and a helicopter after a 911 caller reported "a man with a shotgun was leading a hooded, leashed woman down the street," police spokeswoman Janelle McGregor said.

The officers soon found an 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old man matching that description ? with a fake gun as part of their costumes, McGregor said.

Police filed no charges but warned the pair that their appearance could be misunderstood, McGregor said.

The pair for dressing up like that in this day and age and the people who called the cops...seriously, just idiots running rampant these days.

I'm willing to bet had that been real, and the guy shot the girl in the head at some point in the night, conversation would be along the lines of "I can't beleive no one found that costume suspicious."

We had a similar incident like that in Toronto on Wednesday. A guy in his early 20's was waiting for a train when somebody called 911 and reported this man for his apperance. This man was dressed head to toe in cammies and carrying a rifle. They held the train while Toronto Police's SWAT team surrounded the station and proceeded to take this man down with their 12 man team. It turns out this guy was carrying an airsoft rifle, on his way to a Halloween party. Apparently it's not required by law to have the orange tips on airsoft weapons like it is in the US. All this guy had to do was point his bb gun in the direction of somebody, and the team would have legal authority to shoot him. A Darwin award is waiting for this guy somewhere.

When I was younger, toy guns did not all have the orange tip on them. Some young kid was trick or treating and showed up at a house in Louisiana with a toy gun without the orange tip. The homowner shot and killed him thinking the kid, dressed like a gangster, was there to rob him.
