Smoking....

Does anyone know if smoking has any effects on testosterone levels, or any effects on the nutrients that are put in the body???

i just wrote a paper on smoking and bodybuilding. smoking has recently been shown to decrease protein synthesis and increases the expression of myostatin, which inhibits muscle growth.

as far as nutrients. nicotine is a poison to osteoblasts which is why smoking is associated with osteoperosis.

The data were analysed with analysis of variance and covariance and multiple regression analysis. Smoking men had significantly higher levels of total and free testosterone compared with men who never smoked (p < 0.001 and <0.01 respectively). Both total and free testosterone levels increased significantly with increasing number of cigarettes smoked daily (p < 0.001). Smoking men had 15% higher total and 13% higher free testosterone levels compared with men who never smoked. Thus, smoking seems to be an important confounding factor when evaluating testosterone levels, and could possibly mask borderline hypogonadism.

It's weird as hell but there's plenty of studies that show the same effect......

So trying to bring this statement to layman's terms, it is saying that men who smoke have higher testosterone levels then men who don't, right??? if so how can that be and why is everyone not smoking then??? I just can't see that so I must be reading that wrong...

Yes, smoking raises testosterone...........don't ask me how. And it's not like it doesn't have a boatload of negative effects that would cancel that out, but if someone says it lower test they are wrong.

I imagine most (but not all) smokers probably drink alot aswell, so surely the alcohol would counteract any possible increase in testosterone from smoking?

I have recently quit smoking so I wasn't trying to justify anything. Read my post preoperly and you will see I was asking a question, not stating a fact.

I am a heavy smoker but not a proud smoker... I am addicted to both chew and smoking and my wife will not allow the chew so i smoke... Not as if it is any better but I smoke ultra lights, I absolutley do not drink as when i was in the military (USMC) became a heavy alcoholic. .. probably the addictive personality i have... this is where my weght problems come from... I am not fat so to speak if you were to see me in clothes you and most people say I just look like a big motha fu*(er... I only ask about the smoking and testosterone issue because i am trying to put some good size on with using anabolics (even if i wanted to don't have the money or resources) and I had an old marine tell me in the gym that smoking will give you bitch tits and i have a small set of bitch tits...lol

I was just kidding! It's just that plenty of smokers don't drink

You're right about the combination of the two, alcohol lowers test: the more you drink, the more test is lowered. Alcohol also increases estrogen significantly: this part of why alcohol makes women horny as hell but can have quite the opposite effect on men (even impotency).

Smoking does not cause gyno bro. Your "weight problems" are from too many calories and too many carbs, not smoking. You'll probably feel better if you leaned out, and smoke less. In the mean time, keep hitting the weights hard!!!

Wait a second. Unless I've read the quote incorrectly, it just says that men who smoke tend to have higher testosterone levels. It could just be that men with high testosterone generally partake in riskier behavior than men with low testosterone, behavior that would include smoking. To say that smoking causes increased levels of testosterone, you would also need to have the smokers in the study stop smoking as well as having the non-smokers start smoking and test their testosterone levels again. No ethics board would ever approve such a research design, so it's still inconclusive, as far as I'm concerned.

To say that smoking causes increased levels of testosterone, you would also need to have the smokers in the study stop smoking as well as having the non-smokers start smoking and test their testosterone levels again. No ethics board would ever approve such a research design, so it's still inconclusive, as far as I'm concerned.
Hell Yeah!!!

Smoking sucks - I just quit...It was one of the hardest things i have done.

I once heard that smoking also constricts blood vessels thus restricting oxygen into the muscles. So regardless of the 'Small' increase in test, the constricted blood vessels and limited muscle oxygen limit the growth factor.

It is; however, a good fat burner!

You're right about the combination of the two, alcohol lowers test: the more you drink, the more test is lowered. Alcohol also increases estrogen significantly: this part of why alcohol makes women horny as hell but can have quite the opposite effect on men (even impotency).
Like I said I have recently quit, well this week if im honest, hence the reason i probably just snapped at you haha.

+1

In a nutshell, and everyone should read this statement, correlation DOES NOT equal causation; however, many things DO share a relationship.
