Cottage Cheese Question

For quite some time I had been snacking on cottage cheese and peaches before bedtime, mostly because I hate going to bed on an empty stomach (old 3rd shift habit), and partly because I wanted a slow acting protein. One day I ran out of peaches and thought I'd just eat the cottage cheese by itself. After a few spoonfulls, I noticed a very salty taste. I looked at the ingredients and to my horror saw that the sodium content was 18% !! I hardly ever salt anything, and certainly not 18% of the total.

I have since stopped eating the stuff, and my question is, is this normal for all cottage cheese ?

You can get low sodium some places, it may be hard to find. But I think the brand "Friendship" makes it.

Sodium is a hard one to stay from unless you go 100% fresh. I try to drink lots of water to offset the sodium but I would be interested is a lower sodium cottage cheese myself. Maybe Henry's has something like this.

Here's a link to the Friendship brand: http://www.friendshipdairies.com/pro...t_1_nosalt.php

No idea where to buy it though.

Exclamation

I'll eat 1-2 cup of fat free cottage cheese before bed and have never really thought about the sodium. But I notice mine says 19%.
Now I don't use salt anymore but I know we need a certain amount in our body's. So I guess some further investigating is in order.

Just to be clear, that's 18% of your recomended daily sodium allowance per serving, not that 18% of the cheese is salt.

Are you sure it said 18% or 19%... if it was even 18% salt which is then 9% sodium ... it would crunch.... or at least be inedible 18-19 mg of sodium per 100g perhaps? it sounds dangerous this cottage cheese stuff....

I tried a no salt added cottage cheese and gagged on it. When I eat cottage cheese I eat regular, full fat, salted. I add no sugar added fruit preserves and I can get the cottage cheese down. It's actually quite good with the preserves. I understand that for people with hypertension, salt is to be minimized, though. But I guess the no salt added and no sugar added preserves might work. Maybe I'll try it.

I decided to start eating cottage cheese before bed instead of a shake, trying to change things up on my diet.

it has already been mentioned that it doesnt mean that its 18% salt. It means that the salt in that product meets 18% of your daily requirement of sodium

Question

Is that salt naturally occurring, or added? Even so in fact howsomever, why is there so much dang added salt in everything? I got some pumpkin seed kernels last week at a produce stand, expecting to enjoy a healthful snack. But they were so salty my head nearly exploded. Bllleccchhhh!!!

One cup of 2% lowfat cottage cheese contains 918 mg. of sodium. The maxium amount of sodium recomended per day is 2400 mg., the actual equivalant of one teaspoon of salt. In all realiety we certainly ingest more than one teaspoon per day of salt.
Salt has never been an important part of my diet, but then again neither has cottage cheese. It's only been recent that I can even eat the stuff and it is all for want of a slow acting protein. Guess I'll get my protein in more tasty ways.

I hear there are low sodium versions of cottage cheese, but I've looked around and haven't found them. Granted, I've only looked at the supermarket chains. Do you have to go to a health-oriented food mart to find it?

No need. Just cut up cardboard into small pieces and you have a reasonable approximation.

I quit using salt about 20 years ago and also began reading food labels for nutritional values. It's very easy to meet the bodys requirements without using salt..try pepper.

I eat the low sodium cottage cheese, but I mix in a container of low carb (4g) vanilla yogurt. The mix has become a staple in my diet, especially right before bed.

I ate before going to bed for quite a few years and then started reading how bad is was for you.

I quit for awhile and found it hard to sleep on an "empty" stomach. Then I got used to it and just like anything else, when you get used to it, it's no big deal at all.

I rarely eat ANYTHING after my supper which is usually about 2 hours before I go to bed and it's a small meal, like ALL my other meals now.

I really think that portion control and not eating before going to bed has made a BIG difference in my weight and health.

I also eat cottage cheese at night before bed...along with one spoonfull of natural peanut butter. I don't like the sodium content either, but I don't know of a better thing to eat before bedtime that I don't have to drink. If anybody has a suggestion, I'm all ears.

I was reading an article that the high sodium eaten in NA is from foods that are fast and processed, something in the range of 95%. If your diet is pretty natural the CC shouldn't be too much of a concern.
