is 1 beer after your workout bad?

heard an interview with a bodybuilder about how bad alcohol is after working out. says if you are goign to get wasted then dont ever work out because it will negate your work out.

what about drinking 1 beer, 2 hours after your work out. is that goign to be a problem?

I really don't see it being a problem. If one or two beers helps you relax, then go for it. Pretty much empty calories, but it won't negate your training.

its not gonna destroy your gains.

    but its not reccommended.

    everything in moderation.

Not Very ideal.. alcohol does nothing good for you in all seriousness..

sure maybe 1 or 2 wont be that drastic.. but everything in moderation is key.. just dont make a habit of it..

maybe wait till later if you could.. but in all seriousness 1 or 2 shouldnt harm that much

Okay, let's see... OP says 1 beer, responses are "everything in moderation is key". Apparently the people who say that don't know what moderation means. Last time I checked, 1 beer every night or even just on nights the person worked out is moderation.

What is wrong with this forum?

alochol hinders your protein synthesis by 20%...
so any protein is going to be wasted on it... is it worth it for one beer... maybe just go for the light beer for the "look"

Really? Got a paper for that one? Just interested because i'm always looking for reasons to tell my clients to cut back on alcohol!

Alcohol is used as the promary source of fuel in the place of carbohydrates and fats, so if you drink it post workout no fat or carbohydrate will be oxidised until all the alcohol is cleared from your system, this will hinder your gains especially if you are a natural bodybuilder.

Alcohol is also a diuretic and there's some good evidence to suggest that cell volume (hydration) is linked to protein synthesis. There's a great post here by pu12en12g on the topic:

    Cell Volumisation

At the end of the day it's your choice, but i'd rather give my muscle the absolute BEST environment to grow in and flooding my system with alcohol post workout is probably not the best option.

I have found several studies that show that alcohol wreaks havoc on protein synthesis, but never bothered to determine at what level they were at, one rat study found that alcohol will reduce protein synthesis by about 20% one hour after ingesting the alcohol and then around 60% reduction 24 hours after the consumption.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/en...t=AbstractPlus here is one study that shows it as well. Thing is we dont know what level is needed to see that in humans.

As far as the comment about Arnold...I would not be surprised if he was washing down d-bol with the post workout beer...people do tend to forget that those guys did use steroids...

While I am not advocating drinking by any means, I don't believe 1 beer is what affects protein synthesis by 20%. Most of the studies that have lead to the conclusions of lowered test, lowered protein synthesis, etc. were based on binge drinking over a long period of time. I have not seen a study on only a couple drinks, and not consistently, but I'd be willing to bet most of these claims do not apply.

That said, it certainly won't help your physique goals.

After a killer workout your muscle tissue is craving calories, nutrients, and antioxidants to repair teared fibers. Would you rather grow big or grow smaller? This is a no brainer. Not to mention alcohol stunts any fat oxidation induced by your workout and as stated above, drops your protein synthesis rate and lowers test levels for atleast 2 -3 days.

thats 1 glass of wine during their whole pre-contest .. this guy is probably talking about more on a regular basis or a few times a week..

in all seriousness if you want to just push urself back taking in substances like alcohol and drugs will only prohibit u from ur goals..

all the facts are laid out and u can read about it all u want online but in the end its going to come down to ur determination with what u really want
