making door bell

I have to make one for physics and my electromagnet is not strong enough, there is a entire spool of magnet wire on a nickel coted bolt (1/2"x 3 1/2"). I am using a 6 volt (flashlight) battery, and there is a magnetic field generated, it is just not strong enough to pull to armature over to strike the chime (left).

Does anyone have any ideas how i can make this stronger? a car battery works but is completely impractical, I've tried looking for soft iron and non coted steel, and the only thing i could find is a chunk of 1" thick cold rolled steel. would this be better?

If it helps...

Only ways are:
Increase the current
Use a soft iron core
Increase the number of turns around the core.

They are the only three ways.
