Cool, that's the close Douglasville. Under 300 miles, anyway. I think I might be able to make it.

Hell yea, I'm interested.
I'm too far away to train there regularly, but I'd like to come for the opening, and maybe come by once a month or something to train.
We need to register or just show up?

Anybody who is interested in powerlifting at all and is in the area would be pretty foolish to pass this up. At the very least it'd be awesome to shoot the **** with Coan and Hooper!

I'm sorry but I never made it there. Something last second came up and I couldn't go. I'll see the place eventually, looks like it's gonna be an awesome gym.

I went yesterday - I didn't take any video. I forgot to bring my camera with me. Sorry, but I expect you'll get over it.
This is a really nice facility - I'm definitely going to make the trip to train there once a month or so (it's about 1.5 hours from my house). It has several racks, monolift, chest supported row, reverse hyper, etc. I'm a big believer in the fact that you don't really need anything other than a rack, bench, and some weights to get strong, but if I was going to outfit a gym, and I more disposable income than I do, that's exactly the way I would do it.
I don't think they had quite the turnout that they wanted - there were probably 80 people or so there. They put on a great seminar, though.
Greg (the owner) is a really nice guy - very friendly.
Matt Poe was a cool guy. I confess that I've never heard of him before - I looked him up online before I went. I talked to him a lot yesterday, and he was just honestly a really cool guy. After the seminar, he was helping a lot of different people diagnose shoulder/knee issues, and just seemed genuinely interested in helping people out.
Wade Hooper is un-****ing-believably huge. He's maybe 5'3", and 170 lbs. That's the biggest 170 lbs I've ever seen. If I had his proportions I'd stand in front of a mirror to masturbate (err...no homo).
Ed Coan has the exact same proportions as a cinder block. His shoulders must be as big around as he is tall. Just a massive, massive guy.
So anyway, Wade Hooper started by giving a squat demonstration - squatted 500 the same way I'd squat 315. Very impressive. All three of those guys talked about form, mostly. They invited anybody who wanted to try to go ahead. This 16-17 y/o kid did, and so did I. They told me to adjust my setup a little bit - apparently I was doing a bit too much of a good morning off the rack - they told me to get my feet right under the bar. Walked it out, squatted a couple of times. Ed Coan told me my squat form was really nice. Did you get that? Ed Coan told me my squat form was really nice. I was all ! I asked for some advice on my sticking point. Ed Coan suggested mroe posterior chain work. Wade Hooper suggested speed squats. Matt Poe suggested some plyometrics. All of which are probably useful.
Matt Poe did a demonstration of the pushpress, working up to 315. I didn't have too many questions, but I did pick up on the fact that leg drive comes from snapping your hips forward rather than really driving with your legs. I'm going to try to put that into practice, probably later today, so maybe I'll come back with a PR.
Wade Hooper and Matt Poe did a bench press demonstration, talking again mostly about form. Wade Hooper sets up his legs with his toes pointing out perpendicular to his body, which he says tightens him up a lot. He also said leg drive is basically straight down to the floor, not up towards his shoulders. That seems counterintuitive to me, but I'm going to try it and see how it works for me. I'm jealous of Wade Hooper's ROM on bench press. He doesn't have an excessive arch, but he takes a wide grip, and has a huge chest, and his ROM seemed to be 6-7". He worked up to a 405 raw (keep in mind this guy is about 5'3" and 170 lbs).
Ed Coan did a deadlift demonstration. He didn't work up to any kind of excessive weight - I think maybe 315 or so. The main point I picked up from this was to make sure your hips are popping through just as the bar passes your knees. If the bar rises past your knees before you start to push the bar through, you'll have trouble completing the lift.
Hmm...what else? I guess that most of it. I picked up a few tips, but powerlifting is honestly pretty basic stuff. Even talking to the guys afterwards, most of what they had to say is to just give it time. These guys have been training for 20 years - my 5 years really isn't that long.
So there you go - make sure your form is correct - on every rep of every set, put the work in for a decade or two, try not to get injured too much, and voila, you're strong.

What a difference that little tip made. I just set a 30 lb PR in my pushpress, and lifted more than my bodyweight overhead for the first time ever. I'm ridiculously close to 225. I'm going to put most of my bench training on hold for the next month or so to concentrate on this lift.

This is going to take some practice. I'm definitely slow popping my hips forward - it causes the bar to drift out in front of you a bit and puts a lot of the load on your lower back. I just worked up to 405 tonight trying to emulate that technique. I found it really difficult to pop my hips forward soon enough. I'm going to work a lot of speed deadlifts until I can get this down, as it definitely seemed to make the lift easier.
It's all about the ass, baby.

Douglasville Clinic
Thanks for the props.
We spent a lot of time and money getting started but believe we will be a great gym to come to.
Was hoping for more people but the hands on personal with Matt, Ed and wade was top notch and glad those of you who made it benefitted from it.
Flew Ed in from Chicago and Wade from Batton Rouge LA. Matt drove from Nashville. Well worth the money and my son and I got personal instruction from them the night they flew in and on the day of the clinic the used Mike(my son) for demos and teaching. He has already implemented these tips to improve his game.
Glad Umwhatever(we met a few times before and after the seminar forget your name. Come down anytime and you can lift. enjoyed the clinic and glad to see you asked questions and demonstrated.
Happy weve done anything good and beneficial for those who came.
Sorry for those that could not make it it was a great time and talking one on one with the 3 was a dream come true. They are so funny and at dinner they act so normal. Ed gives Wade a hard time about his height and Wade tells Ed he needs a tan. Matt tells ed he lied about his height on his drivers lic and he drives like Miss Daisy....lol They are so down to earth. Had us all rolling. They spent 2 or more hours with 20 of us at dinner talking powerlifting and life in general and even beat up on my two sons and daughter.
Man can they eat steak!!!!!!!!!!!
It is something I will remember and revere forever.
6 months and when we get going strong they are coming back down to do it again for those interested.
Might be a small $10 fee to help with airfare but thats a small price to pay.
We are also getting together a plan for a RAW bench press meet any suggestions appreciated.
Should be fun.
Keep the suggestions coming.
Our # at the Gym is 678-391-8319

My name is Mike, Greg.
I didn't realize Michael was your son. You going to get that kid a haircut or what?
I'll be back in soon to train.
Later.
