Does anyone here have any suggestions? He suffers from high cholesterol and is also trying to lose weight. He's tried the Met-Rx and Pure Protein bars because they have low cholesterol and carbs, but it's a little more difficult looking for a whey protein shake that satisfies what he's looking for in the cholesterol department. He wants one that has less than 15g of cholesterol.
He's 44 years old, 5'7'' and 182 lbs, but mostly fat (stomach) and not much muscle. He wants to go down to 165-170 lbs, but I think he's going about it the wrong way. He's only been getting 1,000-1,600 calories a day, when he should at least be getting a clean 2,000. Our bodies already burn an average of 1,600 calories a day, but he also works out and burns 400+ calories from the treadmill alone (not including his weight lifting exercises). He burns well over 2,200 calories a day, but isn't that a little too much if he's only getting 1,000-1,600 calories per day? That's a 600-1,200+ calorie loss, when I believe it should only be 100-500 more than what you intake. I just don't want him getting sick and putting a risk to his health. I'd really appreciate anyone's help/advice/suggestions because I'm just really concerned about him. He's also considering Hydroxycut. Next is his heart I'll be worried about...ahh.

because doctors love to prescribe un-needed medicine a lot of times, or they are uninformed. There was a 30 page thread about this a while a go, im gonna go track it down. It started off about cholesterol in eggs.. The general concensus was that cholesterol in foods will barely, if at all impact your levels in the body. Most blood cholesterol is hereditary. Someone chime in if im dead wrong, but this is what i remember reading.. I know BoyScout was in on that thread too..

If the doctor is telling your father he needs to watch his cholesterol levels...he probably should listen to that advice....
While I would not reccomend completely ignoring food cholesterol. Saturated and trans fats will raise blood cholesterol a lot more than food chol. The fact that he is taking protein and assumably works out - is a good thing - exercise is one of the few things shown to increase HDL(healthy cholesterol) levels. Seems like he is at least taking some good measures to improve his health.
Honestly, I wouldn't be TOO concerned about what protein bar to get- but look for something lower in fat. The rest of his diet will have a much larger impact on his levels then the protein bar.
fffizzz: You're correct - hereditary issues will play a major role in levels, and unfortunately just being male and increasing age are 2 other huge factors that will lead to high cholesterol.
I'd also reccomend he include some anti-oxidants in his diet if he doesn't already - through food preferably, not supplementation. LDL's can oxidize leading to artery damage ~~~> heart disease.

Dietary cholesterol DOES impact cholesterol levels, as do trans and saturated fats. If anyone doubts this go read the clinical studies on Zetia, which blocks the absorption of dietary cholesterol.

To please your father's doctor, get whey protein isolate. It has very little cholesterol.
Realize that anyone with an affiliation to a supplement company in their signature has ulterior motives when making recommendations. They're primarily concerned with pushing their products. Not your safety or what's best for you.

I did a LOT of reading on it, and it seems that in MOST people dietary cholesterol does not raise blood cholesterol. However, this is not true for all people. So I suggest he does limit it following his doctor's advice. Whey protein isolate does not contain cholesterol. NOW foods makes a cheap WPI.
