Does anyone actually Squat?
Does anyone actually squat? I'm originally from MN and grew up in a gym (family owned) and you were ridiculed to a certain degree if you didn't do squats. Now I live out in AZ and I see a fair amount of guys with bigger upper bodies, but most of them have the legs of a 12-year old girl. At best they throw a bunch of weight on the leg press and they think they are bad ass. What a joke!
Apparently, these big guys are little girls in hiding because there to 'scared' to squat.
Also, can someone put a memo and tell these guys that have been lifting for 3 weeks to stop wearing wife-beaters. Your not big dude & even if you were it's still gay.

Everybody online squats! In real life though, I only deadlift. It's even harder in my experience to spot a fellow deadlifter.

A lot of people at my gym squat. However, they mostly use the Smith machine and perform a 2 inch ROM.

Yes, but just bodyweight ones. But I don't really work out.

I never squat. It's bad for the knees, dangerous for the lower back, and it hurts teh whole body.
I curl, bench (on the smith machine), and do standing ab crunches. I'm in extremely good shape from this regimen.

Standing ab crunches help to relax the lower back. Your ligaments do all the work, very therapeutic.

Defiant1> I know you read on ABCbodybuilding (shape training). I believe the "boss" there, Wilson, has argued about the importance of doing compounds (squats) followed by isos to take advantage of the hormonal releases/changes.
Of course I squat. One of the biggest, best, and safest exercises out there and the best way to build your quads.

Squats are a great exercise, but people ascribe too many benefits to them. The whole hormone thing is way overstated.
And it seems a lot lately in particular.
Even Stuart McRobert recently admitted that not everyone is suited for squatting.

Most people parrot PL style squatting. this movement feels un-natural to many.
Even a child instinctively squats down like an oly lifter when he has to pick something up.
I certainly agree with you. But PL squat and oly squat are so fundamentally different... some are built for one and not the other. More people should parrot oly squatting, especially for those who can't get PL style to work.
This is of course assuming you by "not everyone is suited for squatting" mean leverage/form issues.

Wtf...are you guys serious? So what your telling me is that your the guy in the gym w/ a big upper body and the legs of an ethopian boy?
It's such a cop out when you say crap like, "oh it's bad for your knees"...bs...my dad's 65 years old & still squats...his knees do not bother him at all. It's about proper form. You can hurt yourself doing any exercises if your doing it improperly.
The fact is that you don't want to do squats because they hurt! Keep doing bench 8 times a week. FYI when people look at you their not not in awe, their laughing because your so out of proportion.

Who cares? I ask this every time I see a thread like this and nobody can seem to answer it.
If you want to squat, do it. But why concern yourself with whether or not other people do it too?

Squatting is lame, and so are people who question other people's manhood for not squatting.
And who gives a flying **** how skinny the guy in the wife-beater is...he can still beat a wife. And, dammit, that's what wife-beaters are all about...

Who is/are "you"?
I LOVE squats, and have leg day tomorrow. I am so excited about it.
I'd rather have enormous legs than enormous arms.
but you're probably right, a lot of people don't like the hard work.
Remember, some people ARE NOT built to squat...sad but true. Not all joints are equal. just like weighet dips. I can do these heavy, some people - despite proper form - can't do them without pain.

Thumbs up bro...it's all about hard work...any jack ass can throw 85 plates on the leg press. Whether or not 'your built' to squat is irelevant...I'm not built for benching (long ass arms) but I still work at it & try to improve.

X2 - you don't want to squat at all. I heard that it causes cancer, heart disease and homosexuality. Plus, if you squat, the terrorists win! Also, make sure to only use machines, especially the smith: bench pressing with a normal bar causes dementia, sudden death and people to suddenly start putting on unexpected weight around the chest area!
