machines vs free weights
This question has been on my mind for a while...are machines just as effective as free weights or not? I would assume that because you're using the same amount of motion both ways, there wouldn't be much of a difference, except with free weights you're balancing the weight yourself.
thoughts?

Machines will target that specific muscle(s) that theyh are designed for, while free weights will work many other muscles along with the one you are training.

Free weights PWN! Seriously though, minimize the machine usage.

Well I've been using free weights for a while, but I've used machines every now and then as well and feel that I can still get a good workout from machines as well.
One of the articles I read says there should be a balance between the two, which makes sense.

Yes, there is a balance, but it's like a 4:1 ratio (free weights to machines).

I kinda figured that...because if you do too much direct work on the muscle you wont benefit the stabillizers, but if you do too much it can also take away from that muscle.

Machines give you "perfect form" and may be easier to do for that reason.
Free weights are somewhat harder because you have to lift the weight with proper form which requires technique.

Exactly. And generally when it's harder, it's better for you. Free weights make you work harder thus producing better gains.

Free weights allow for the option of compound movements too. Most machines I've seen work on isolation movements.
Compounds are preferred when trying to add mass because of it's effect on releasing growth hormone.

Well, that's kind of a given lol, I've known that for a while, the biggest reason I posed the question is that every gym I have gone to seems to have nothing but machines and maybe one-two benches, one squat station and some dumbells. So I was just thinking on if there were better effects from them.
I suppose it's all more of a conveinence thing though.

That's just the demand of your gym. Most gyms are around a 50/50 split though.

Yeah man, there's only one gym around here that's 50/50 but the membership is outrageously lame (I'm saying that from all the fine print lol) I use my home gym though, only thing that sucks about it is I have no leg press which is why I was considering a gym membership.

What equipment do you have? You could do some hack squats or front squats.

not that i'm pro-machine, because i love free weights,
but the machines at my gym, are hammer strength ( don't know if they
are everywhere else too.)
but a lot of the machines show on the description that they are the same compound movements and muscle groups as the free weights.
but i still stick to FW, it's just more fun IMO

I have a gold's gym set up, 300lbs of weight (perfect for most of my workouts cept squats and stuff).
Has a lat pulldown bar and everything as well. Just, I really enjoy doing leg press, it's fun as hell for me lol, one of my best lifts.

Free Weights FTW... with machines, your moving a weight along a designated path, which makes it easier due to the lack of stability required. I feel like free weights are better for overall workouts because they strengthen everything involved with the motion, down to the little seldom used muscles. But machines can be useful especially for isolation or really targeting a specific muscle group.

Most gyms are full of machines today because people are scared of free weights...when to be honest, free weights are much safer. Also, because you're working your stabilizer muscles, your strength is much more useful than someone who used machines the whole time -- eg, in athletic performance.
"Machines" in the normal sense -- leg extensions, preacher curls, etc. -- are probably just generally a bad idea. Cable exercises like seated rows, pushdowns, crossovers, etc. are definitely a worthwhile exercise option.
The difference is that "machines" have a 1 track ROM, and because not everyone's built the same way that can damage your joints. This isn't a worry with cables.
I'd still say leave pull-downs behind though...weighted pull-ups/chins FTW.
