    Do brain cells grow back?

After years of drug and alcohol abuse, is it possible for the brain to rebuild itself to its former self?

I think you can regain around 10% of "lost" brain cells, or something like that I read once.

The more I think about it, the more I don't see why you wouldnt be able to. I mean, the brain is a muscle too, and if you abuse it for years, it might be injured, but can heal if allowed too, and be able to rebuild if exercised properly. ie: thinking exercises, memory activities, intense studying , and avoidance of any brain damaging compounds..

damaged neurons don't grow back. but the brain will relocate some functions as best it can to other zones that don't normally handle them.

that usually means relocating the more important things to memory zones.

Well, what else could it be? No offense of course. It being a muscle makes the most sense.

That must mean an overall loss in total performance though.

Im sure you regain brain cells to a certain degree, i read somewhere that smokers who quit within 6 months of starting smoking (packet a week) can have perfectly healthy lungs after a few years smoke free

I think for the most part no. I have an uncle who was a serious drug abuser when he was younger, and even today, after quitting for 15+ years has terrible memory and speech problems. It makes me kinda sad when i see him but it's the price you pay.

I think alot of it has to do with wanting to be better. When people abuse drugs, not only do the drugs damage brain cells, but drugs take over your whole way of life, and your THINKING patterns.
You get used to not using your brain for normal, intellectual uses. You use your brain and intelligence to find ways to get drugs, and get that ellusive "ultimate high". I think it could be a case of simply forgetting HOW to use your brain instead of not being able to.

    Unlikely, unless you:

run around reaching up newly-impregnated females' vaginas, ripping their fetuses out from their wombs, and using the stem cells to grow new brain cells for yourself

or you could just buy some stem cells i guess... maybe on ebay

There are several soloutions to this problem. Ashgwanda has been shown to regrow damaged dendrites, for one. Look into nootropics.

What we're talking about here is called neural regeneration, it happens quite effectively in animal peripheral nervous systems but human central nervous system's arent capable of regenerating. (unless you transplant human cns cells into an animal's pns)

Basically once your brains reaches maturity, it doesn't form new cells but can make better use of the existing neural connections it has. So in terms of intelligence, if you have taken a lot of drugs in the past or had head injuries etc, dont worry too much because your brain will learn to work with what its got to improve its functioning without any external help.

Nootropics work differently, I'll use piracetam as an example as its probably the most popular one at this time. It works by increasing the transmission of neurons between the two cerebral hemispheres. You have your left and right lobe which is connected by a structure called the corpus collosum, piracetam works at this centre structure. This results in better integration of language and memory mainly but has shown other positive benefits as well

"Smart Drugs" have an amazing capacity to aid a damaged brain. Supplementing something like Oxiracetam (w/ choline source, preferably Alpha GPC) along with a few others will do wonders. I've seen druggies turn themselves around with these drugs. Understand that it takes months and months, if not years, to do so.

Im a bio major at UWF and I can tell you, once a brain cell dies it can absolutely never grow back, neither do spinal cord cells regenerate. People who have received spinal injuries and recover, regain movement and motor control as the swelling of the injured spinal cord goes down, this can take months, the cells themselves, however, are not regenerating.
When the brain is damaged and cells are destroyed the cells NEVER repair themselves, the brain can be retrained to use different areas and different cells to do the same task, learning to walk, speak, ect. But overall capacity is diminished and the individual affected may never relearn to the same level of proficiency they were at before the injury.
Some areas of the brain such as the hippocampus, when damaged, have no other section of the brain capable of taking over there functions and permanent damage is observed. Hope this helps clear thing up.

A bio major at a university at 17 years old? lol. I'm studying law/psych at Auckland University

You're absolutely right. The only thing I would dispute is the part in bold. There have been numerous cases of patients with various neuroplasticity conditions which have recovered fully to the extent where they were able to walk/move perfectly normal again (in cases of motor region lesions). Looking back on my notes theres actually examples on practically every kind of brain damage where the patient has recovered completely

Shows what a resourceful structure the brain is huh..

So which drugs actually make you dumber?

I've heard alcohol is worse on your brain than marijuana, since THC only messes with your brain receptors temporarily, and eventually leaves your system completely... whereas alcohol kills brain cells.

I'd imagine heavy use of substances like crack, heroin, and ecstacy, would also have a permanent effect on some areas of the brain.
