    Frank Shamrock training...

I was training 1 on 1 with Frank Shamrock today and asking him about his training. He said he does High Intensity Training. He says he trains 2 or 3 times a week, very basic and pretty much with barbells maybe 30-45 minutes. He says he does basic exercises like deadlifts, squats, cleans, pullups... He also says he does conditioning through sportspecific bodyweight exercises (not like pushups and stuff) but with grappling oriented movements. He also said he hates running because it's hard on the joints...You want those when you're older!

Anyway, it was great getting private training from the man!
What does it take to be number 1?

    Jiu-jitsu, wrestling, boxing, Muay Thai

I don't know, I've done the WSB, various periodizations schemes... A lot of stuff and they usually just take more time with less results. So I agree with Frank and it obviously hasn't hurt him at all, so I'm pretty confident in the approach. It's also been my experience that, with the exception of very few (like 1 or two) the guys with the biggest mouths espousing these WSB approaches and the like are usually always as weak as kittens. It seems to me that when you take away the steriods and the highly gifted (who will do well on anything), it's the guys who stick to the basics that get the best results.

Yes, he said he is fighting him on October 1st and that he's going to kick his ass. One of the fighters who was also having lunch with us said that Cesar isn't a fighter, and Frank said, "He is now!"

No, I met him through my manager who was holding an event that Frank came to. Frank said he is gone a lot, but I know he does teach when he's there. I think he'd be a great guy to train with full time, he invited me out there to train and I'll definitely take him up on that. I've always been a jiu-jitsu guy, but Franks take on grappling is a very different perspective. I've rolled with a lot of top jiu-jitsu guys, but I think Frank was the best grappler I've ever rolled against. Definitely worth training with.

some Periodization programs are quite basic
I'm not as weak as a kitten
but I also wouldn't really recomend straight WSB or straight Powerlifting at all for an MMA
I think you could wind up with some strength imabalances that would wind up getting you injured

Just remember that Frank Shamrock knows what works best for Frank Shamrock. Just because it works for him doesn't necessarily mean it will work for you. Few guys in MMA train exactly the same way. They've all found workouts that suit them as athletes and what suits their styles.

True, but look at it this way, if I'm working 60 hours a week and training MMA 6 days a week, there is only so much time to get in weight training. That and HIT has given me the most success.

Frank Shamrock eh..... in the original post you said this

". He says he does basic exercises like DEADLIFTS, SQUATS, cleans, pullups"

Hmmm this whole thread seems like BS seeing as how he has broke his back twice, and doesnt do squats or deadlifts.

Heres the quote from Frank Shamrock himself.

"Frank Shamrock: Unfortunately, I've broken my back in two different places, so I can't do deadlifts or weighted squats anymore. Even so, I don't recommend that my guys do deadlifts and squats because of the structural trauma that it puts on you. "

    This is the source.

    an interview with Frank Shamrock.

How much other stuff are you lying about?

zenmachine, if you do know frank, tell him he needs to get back in the ring full time again asap.
"I summon to my aid the forest spirits from the forest and the water spirits from the water: and you, forest spirits of the forest, water spirits of the water, come to my aid against my opponent fist-fighter, and enable me to defeat my opponent fist-fighter with my own fists. And you, forest spirits from the forest and water spirits of the water, take the rock from this corpse and place it on the hands, or head, or feet of my opponent fist-fighter...and just as this dead man is heavy from the earth and rock, so too may my opponent fist-fighter be heavy to lift his hand against me, and may my opponent become weak in the arms and the legs, and blind in the eyes from my verdict until the time I remove it."

I can only tell you what he told me. If you want a script of how basically the conversation went, I asked,"Frank, what do you do for weight training?" He replied,"I think lifting is very important, but I think it's only good for injury prevention. When I lift I don't do low reps, I do high intensity training, 2 or three times a week."

I asked what kinds of exercises he recommends, and I told him I do squats, deadlifts, pullups, and dips. He replied, "Yeah, I do squats and deadlifts, but I also do a lot of conditioning exercises with bodyweight for grappling."

We also talked about a lot of conditioning stuff, which is when he said he doesn't run because it's bad for the joints.

At any rate, yeah I have seen that before. I don't know how accurate it was, in terms of quotes, or maybe he changed things up for himself and does things differently now, any number of things. But that is what he told me.
What does it take to be number 1?

    Jiu-jitsu, wrestling, boxing, Muay Thai

Because 2 is not a winner and 3 no one remembers!

I doubt he'll consider getting back in the ring full time. He is fighting Cesar Gracie on October 1st, though. He is involved in a lot of small business stuff. He is also starting a new MMA team because the guys he trained with Javier Mendez and Crazy Bob left him for a contract with someone else. I'm planning on going out to San Jose this fall, most likely.

Not that it necessarily proves anything, but if you go to www.kopromotions.com Jeff Ford is my muay thai coach and manager, he introduced me to Frank. If you click on the Art of War photo gallery, Frank Shamrock was there. The following day I trained with him in KC. Also you can go to www.kcfightnews.com my screen name is JayBrandon, I thank him the day after for the training.

What separates Randy Couture from everybody else is the fact that he is the only MMA fighter I know of, who has achieved real success, whose diet is Alkeline (sp?) based. I remember reading the foods he eats and my goodness does this guy eat a lot of greens. There are a lot of Pride/UFC fighters in their 20's who only wish they could be in as good physical condition as Randy is. And I certainly don't need to tell the bodybuilders on this board how important nutrition is.
