I weigh 275 and the first time I was squatting 495, but those where an old pair of shoes.
Next time I did a walk out in the rack with 675 and as soon as I shifted from one leg to the other it went "pop".
After the "air" pops they make this annoying squeeking noise every step you take.To save time and confusion, let's just assume that I know everything.
There is no bias on my behalf. Not that it matters, I can be biased if I want to since I am a genius and can argue two contradictory positions simultaneously.

I've got a question of common sense here ...
If you drop a ... say 60lb dumbell on your foot, 45lb plate, whatever -- what is a `shoe` going to do besides keep the bleeding contained?
If your foot is gonna be f--ked, it's gonna be f--ked barefoot or in shoes.
Now, who here that keeps defending shoes for a safety reason wears steel toes?

Good point with the dumbell but have you ever seen a person damn near sever their pinky toe by loosing control of a 45lbs plate and dropping it on their sandaled foot?
My wrestling shoes that i use to work out in are so tight that a weight dropped on my foot is going to hurt but they're also thick enough to keep the above situation from happening.

Converse All-Stars are probably the most popular choice for cheap lifting shoes. Anything with an incompressible sole is good though.
Squatting barefoot is fine (excluding safety).Oggie22's Lifting Log: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=163231711
