Exclamation IPOD versus MP3 PLAYER

IPOD versus MP3 PLAYER: which is better and why.
- It seems Ipods require alot of trouble if u have Windows and not MAC.
- Also it seems to break easily
- The SOUND seems to not be all that great. Can some of you people tell me which sounds better? IPOD OR MP3 PLAYER???
What are some good MP3 Players out there that you feel surpasses the IPOD in SOUND QUALITY.

I thought an Ipod was an Mp3 player. I got Phillips and love it. It can take a drop and not break like Ipods....

IPOD- Uses hard disk memory. Holds alot more songs but can skip and eventually get damaged when jolted around of even jogging with it do to it's memory system. I also think it's overpriced.

MP3 Player- Flash memory. Holds less songs, but can be jolted around and is better to jog with etc.

IMO, if you're willing to spend some extra bucks and want alot of songs go with the ipod.

If you want a cheaper one, that still holds a decent amount of songs and can be jolted around a little, go with MP3

I like mp3 player sticks better for a workout. They're cheaper, smaller, weigh less and you can drop them and bash them around a bit.

My Phillips hold 20 gigs (with no problems ever)....More than most Ipods. My friends Ipod first one he had got so hot during charge up it turned red and could have lit his house up. Thank god we found it. His second one is starting to skip around duriing some songs...IMO Ipods are overrated.

I have an ipod and a "regular" mp3 player. Don't really use the Ipod because the small, light mp3 player serves my purposes more. I guess it really depends on what you're needs are. I only use mine at the gym.

I have done much research on this. I don't mean I've been reading, I mean I've been buying and trying. Throughout the last few years I have owned:

1 64 megabyte flashcard mp3 player

1 256 megabyte headphones mp3 player (the player was in the actual headphones)

1 oldschool minidisc player

1 1gig type minidisc player

multiple mp3 cd players

1 ipod mini

1 20 gig zen jukebox

1 20 gig ipod

The 64 meg player was one of those 50 - 100 dollar POS that sounded like ****, had no display options or anything. Worthless.

The headphone mp3 player is great, good sound and very convenient. I found it on ebay for a mere 30 bucks. Very happy with it for the gym.

The minidisc player is not worth it. The new 1 gig minidisc players are 2nd best to the ipod if you don't mind a slow mp3 upload speed due to sony only using atrac files. It takes time to convert mp3 to atrac.

The mp3 CD players are your best option for going the cheap route. It is very reliable and each cd holds 70 megs of mp3s and cost pennys. If you don't mind having a cd player and cds with you it would be my choice in all situations.

The ipod mini is one of the greatest inventions ever, but 4 gigs wasn't enough for me in the car.

The zen jukebox is almost as good as the ipod, but its a bit clunky and the browsing ability is lacking.

The 20 gigabyte ipod is the greatest thing Ive ever bought. I use it EVERYWHERE. In the gym, in the car, in school, in the house. Everywhere!

So this short little description is nothing more than to show that I am someone who has tried them all, and I did not buy the ipod for the hype. It truly is your best option if you want a lot of music on you a lot of the time. Otherwise get an mp3 cd player.

As far as sound quality goes that depends on the speakers/headphones and quality of mp3s (both in bitrate and quality of ripping) more than the hardware. What I mean by quality of ripping is some programs cause skips in the songs when your PC is being too heavily used.

Look into iRiver MP3 players. Not only do they have a model which holds 1 GB of music (which is more than enough music storing ability), but they are very reliable pieces of equipment. I used to have an RCA Lyra 128 MB MP3 player, but I am so glad I gave it up for the iRiver. Check them out

Edit: Just noticed I put 128 GB originally for my old RCA Lyra. Now, that'd be a lot of songs

What are some good MP3 Players out there that you feel surpasses the IPOD in SOUND QUALITY.
Personally, i would definately go for the MP3 player... I would be looking for something around the 1gig mark, as in my opinion, that is sufficient for things like daily travel and gym...

They are smaller, tend to last longer, as they have no moving parts, the battery life is often considerably longer (again, no moving parts), they tend to include more built in features, e.g radio and capacity to record directly from radio, they definately dont skip or become faulty from constant vibrations, e.g. when running, they are not heavy or cumbersome, AND, they cost less.

For example, i would probably buy something such as the following product:

Zen 5 gig vs iPod Mini (both cost 200 bucks)

Zen= FM radio, 5 gig, voice and radio recorder, you can partition the drive so you can upload songs basically from any computer without any kind of software.

Ipod= 4 gig, no radio and other features but its made by Apple and and has 12hr battery life versus 8hr of the Zen.

Get either one, they are both great.

Newest IPOD mini's (I have one) are rated at 18 hours, but effectively get around 10 hours (playing at good volume and using the backlight a bit). Zen Micro is rated at 12 hours but probably gets around 7

The IPOD Mini is great, its small, and has a great user interface. And its CHEAP. Only downside is that the 4GB version is cheap but the 6GB is quite a bit more.

And will ppl PLEASE stop lumping mp3 players into one category, (plus IPOD'S are mp3 players too). And mp3 players do not only come with flash memory, there are many that use hard drives just like the ipod. These are very very simple concepts to grasp.

i own a 128mb iriver ifp 360

and here is the review i wish i had read before.

1.radio features suck never gets a signal unles you go out in the open and hold it with your arms extended towards the sun, youll never use them.
2. voice recording fatures are never used. i thoughtt it was cool that it could record audio..just a cool thing to have. but really who uses that sh!t? never used it in my 2 years of ownership.
3.batteries are not rechargeable. and they go out every 2 or 3 workouts. i bought rechargeable ones but it's a real pain in the ass to have to take the batteries out a nd charge them. not to mention i end up forgettin mos of the time and training musicless. so the entire falsh player less battery usage yada yada is bs cause and ipod last longer than that.
4. 128 mb's are really nothing. roughly 25 songs? pleease. (before i bought it i thought it was a lot now it i seems ridiculous.
5. price i paid 140 bucks for it. now you can get a 1gb ipod shuffle for a 100 bucks.
6. lcd looks absolutly great they did an autstanding job. but who cares about that? when i'm training youre not scrolling through songs or if i do i never look at the lcd.
7. size is pretty good. but the ipod is slimmer and is built around a stronger design.
9. a flash player has no.. advantage over a hard disk mp3 player. by the time your hd goes bad. your mp3 player will be obsolete anyways.
10. earbuds that come with the player are basicaly disposable..i got me some snug fitting ear buds they are great and isolate from the gym talking bull****.

Go with the ipod mini or ipod shuffle. i don't own them but i think it would be the best buy out there, don't be discouraged because it doesn't have radio, voice recorder or what ever else, or beacuse someone's ipod went bad. they usulaly replace them when damage wasn't caused by the user.

my next mp3 player will need to have video playing features..cause i don;t want to be buying some crap to buy a newer one afterards. every few months or so they realease some new other **** that leaves your gear obsolete. just like my 128mb mp3 player

the iaudio x5 seems like a good future proofing thing to buy. link:

i just got an ipod shuffle and its great. it is SOOOOO tiny and light, very surprised by that. the sound quality sounds great with the headphones it comes with. it has a gig of storage so you can put over 200 songs on it. just dont expect to find specific songs unless its in the beginning of your playlist as this mp3 player does not have an LCD display. the lack of a display sounds a lot worse then it actually is though.

iPod's arent the best mp3 storage device out there, theyre just the best marketed, and people just believe the hype and buy them.
