i've just been wondering recently..... how does hydroxycut work? i noe it increases ur metabolism and therefore increases fat loss... but how does it go about doing it? does it deplete ur glycogen levels 1st before reaching the fats? or another way??

Fat burners work a little more complexly than just upping your metabolism. It DOES up your metabolism significantly, hense the caffine and yerba mate, etc that's in it.
Here's a general run down on what happens with most (not all) fat burners. There is a part of your brain that regulates the size and quantity of fat cells in your body, the normal transmission is something like "we're ok". The fat cells send messages to the brain and the brain sends messages back, life is peachy. Most fat burners will intercept that message and fake the brain out by sending it messages that the fat cells are still "ok". While the brain is tricked the fat burner ups the metabolism and increases (theoretically) fat loss (yes there is quite a bit of water loss with these as well due to the caffine in the product). Fat cells shrink down, and you appear to have lost weight and size where you want.
Here's the catch. If/when you get off of the fat burners or when your body gets used to the mixture of the fatburner you're on the fat cells begin to scream at the brain saying that they're "NOT ok", the body goes into starvation mode. This is where you start to gain your weight back because of a few things: your fat cells go into intake mode (they suck in as much of the food you're eating as they can), your metabolism slows way down, and your body heat lowers. It's a survival technique used by your body (was very useful in the caveman days when the next meal wasn't promised). The fat cells go into the idea that "you starved me once, you'll starve me again" and often store MORE fat than they had origonally held. This is pretty much what happens on "yo-yo" diets as well.
Fat burners are great things when added to a WELL balanced nutrition plan and a well put together exercise program as well. But by themselves can lead to alot of problems not to mention, as someone posted earlier, suck the money out of you rather quickly.
Hope that helped, if you need any other information feel free to PM me.

EGCG in green tea actually increases calories burned.
Glucomannan is a specific type of fiber that is an effective appetite suppressant.
L-carnitine aids in mobilizing fatty acids to be burned for energy. That's the theory, anyway.
Caffeine binds to adenosine receptors and slows the degradation of cyclic AMP, which ends in increased norepinephrine secretion.
Alpha lipoic acid is at worst a potent antioxidant, at best can help with glucose uptake.
Guarana is basically caffeine.
White willow is similar to aspirin and would only be beneficial in an obese person.Speller Extraordinaire. Don't believe the lies.

I lost weight while using it. I got to like the thermogenic's lift, but after a while I was taking them like three-four times a day. I took 'em to wake up in the morning. Hydroxycuts sped up my metabolism, but did not help enough to keep using them; and, they upset my stomache and made me sweat profusely.
How it works is this. You sweat the excess weight off when you workout and the stomache spasms helps move food through your system. Sounds like the side effects makes up any loss you get. It is a safe drug though.Last edited by ffloyd; 07-07-2005 at 07:28 AM.
There are no stupid questions, only questions you don't ask.
